I know you like Hughes and Schmidt but did you see Hughes several times just look at his check in the defensive zone. Also, how often do you see him take a hand off his stick, so he might actually be able to make a pass. Have you watched him skate the puck into trouble, have you seen him not move the puck forward, so he can go for a skate with the puck.
Back in the day, it was called being a puckhog and the boys took care of that in the dressing room.
Now Schmidt, how did you like that 1o foot sucker pass in the neutral zone that was off by 3 feet causing player to stretch forward. The forward had the puck bounce over stick and it then created odd-man rush against. Or how about those passes in the defensive zone that are just being the intended receiver of pass. Or like Hughes not passing the puck up to the open man.
But hey, they are great skaters and look sexy while out on the ice. That is all that matters.
See, I can pick apart players just as easily as others can pick apart different players that they like and for some reason refuse to. - Reubenkincade
I never said I liked those guys, only that they could skate, which is an integral part of the game today. Myers also can’t connect a pass to save his life. I don’t hate him. He can be an effective third pairing guy if he keeps his game simple and he has a decent shot. I was only saying he is painful to watch when he tries to go any direction but straight. |

Who is Hoofs? - Reubenkincade
I just like to type something completely different for Höglander each time I mention him. The ö makes the “o” sound “ou” and he has quick feet, Hoof, and because he is a hockey player you need to add either an s or a y to the end of his name. |

Ok. Fair point.
Myers made several nice short 10 foot passes to the open man, all throughout the game, in the defensive zone, while the Jets were putting on a ton of pressure.
In my opinion he was the Canucks best defenseman last night.
But holy crap, he is an awkward skater, for sure. |

Already sent him a site like that. Ain't worth the bother - NewYorkNuck
I’m giving the option to clean up his act. Then I will literally flag every post until the refs are so sick of having to check every post that they either ban him, or me... |

At least he’s not all neck and Richard like Gaudette
Yes, I did see at least one sequence where he made a number of good short passes to exit the zone (in the third maybe?), but his go to is typically high off the glass and out. I also watched him dump the puck in from center on a change with absolutely no pressure.
Anyway, I’d say we need 4, maybe 5 new D next year. Should be no trouble at all for Benning to make that happen. |

Don't think that's going to happen, especially the UFA route as there aren't many good D men this year. Dougie Hamilton? Don't really have the cap to sign him, and do you want to sign a player that'll be close to 30 on a long term deal?
Hughes, Schmidt, OJ all locks for next year.
Edler I can see coming back for a one year deal. Myers is potentially picked up by Seattle? Benn could also be brought back for a year depending on how he does with QH over the course of the season (I think he's looked good so far).
I'm really hoping JB can work the phones and trade for a D man from a team that doesn't want to lose them to Seattle for nothing. |

Hughes doesn't need to be protected and Benning or whoever is GM will protect the only defenseman they have that isn't soft.
Myers isn't the problem with this team, it is the systems and a lack of good coaching, being the most concerning. |

I was being a bit of a drama Queen, there’s no getting out from Schmidt / Myers without it costing you something. I mean, you could probably trade either and get something back, but I think you would lose more than you gained.
Edler has been Edler. If he was back a year at a time, $4m next year, maybe $2 the following year? I’m all for having guys like Benn, Hamonic etc on low $, low risk deals. This team needs 8-10 legit guys per year. |

I am actually good with Myers, I find he fits a need for this team and isn't as terrible as people think he is. He's just an adventure sometimes.
However, he has 3 years after this one for 6 mil. That's a lot, as he's going to start to decline in that time frame. If you expose him and Seattle picks him up, it is a small hit now but it saves more in the long run. |

I think that sentence is self evidence
Lots of teams would take on Schmidt. Myers... his cap hit relative to his play is what holds him back from having more value.
Edler for like 2 would be great, not sure if he'd agree, but he's not moving anywhere else in his career. The Canucks just need one more young-ish top 4 guy.. and that's hard to come by without giving anyone up. Too bad Florida is doing so well, there were rumors of Ekblad during the offseason being available |

Yup. The Aquilinis will never build a championship team. We will continue to cheer for mediocre bubble teams. Staying average on the fly. |

I’m sure you could trade Schmidt (or Myers), but would you get something back that makes you a better team now then not trading them? I don’t think so.
Benning could probably get a 2nd for Schmidt, yeah, he turned a 3rd into a 2nd, but who’s going to play D for the Canucks, Chatfield? |
