Lets not pretend it was only the goalie that lead those teams to a cup. The leafs best defensemen would be the #4 on that Blues team. Matthews and Tavares would have been 3rd and 4th centers on thoses Pens teams.

That's not true, a player can take a home discount and still get paid big money. The leafs backed the truck up of John Tavares. It was mentioned that other teams offered slightly more.

Staying with the leafs, and probably a better example, as atleast Tavares has continued to produce at the same rate as always. They definitely backed up the truck for David Clarkson in 2013. The Oilers apparently offered more, but playing for his childhood team was more important.

I have no doubt Toronto will do what it takes to steal a player from a contending team, overpay past the other team's means, then waste their talent. That's what they do.

They can't overpay past the other teams means. If it comes down to money, almost ever team in the league will be able to offer more. The Blues will have significantly more in cap space then the leafs. They will have Binningtons 4.4, Bozak's 5, Steen's 5.7, Schwartz's 5.3, Hoffman's 4 and a couple of other guys between 1-2 million.

The leafs have Andersen at 5 and Hyman at 2.5. Everyone else is 1.5 or lower, and most will need to be replaced with other players, so there is no savings. If Binnington doesn't sign with the Blues, it is either because he doesn't want to or the team doesn't want him. It won't be because the Blues don't have the means.

Binnington isn't worth a big contract. And tye leafs cant even afford one.
