Why do you give Maurice so much credit when a great player plays great? - Ross77
If he is to blame when a player plays poorly, he should be given credit when a player does well.....seems fair to me.
I have coached multiple sports in my life, and I believe in 2 principles:
1) Always try to put a player in a position where he can succeed.
2) Avoid putting a player in a position where he may embarrass himself.

I as well have coached, and I agree with your principles but Maurice does not.
I am not blaming Maurice for a player playing bad. if he’s a bad player, I’m blaming Maurice for allowing a bad player to play.
Putting a bad player in any situation is asking for a trouble. Beaulieu and Thompson are bad players.

Further to this, watching Wheeler and expecting the player he was three years ago to appear is also ridiculous.

I think the Jets should go out and sign Yzerman, Gretzky, Lemieux and for good measure Eric Lindros. Maurice will then coach them like its the early 90’s and be shocked at their lack of production.

Shief-PLD-Connor
Ehlers-Pionk
Vesalainen-wheels-Stastny
Copp-Morrisey - Ross77
I think this would be our best option, or very close to that. |

Don’t normally think this, but in this case you are!
Maurice would be the ideal coach of a team like Detroit or Los Angeles. Teams with not many talented players but guys who need to grind to get victories. Maurice is not made for coaching talented teams.
I think it was in 2002 when the Canes played the Red Wings in the finals, he played Argus Irbe like 70 games or something like that. Now that was a team that lacked talent but had grinders. Maurice sure loves grinding types of guys. He mentions grinding all the time and it drives me bonkers. He’s even got Sawyer and Beyak talking about grinding. I even think that Maurice is actually above his head in the NHL, he should actually be an ECHL coach, now that league is full of grinders. Truth be told if I hear about him grinding again I am going to lose it! |

I'm guessing "right" in Rexy's world , is in actuality, means the 7% of the time he was actually correct. |

for all the more "positive", Maurice fans in this blog ask yourself this.... why does Maurice, the 2nd longest tenured coach currently in NHL, a top 10 games coached all time, never, and I mean never get mentioned as a possible coach for Team Canada ta the Olympics?

If my memory is good, Babcock was the coach in 2010, and 2014.....and look where he is today...LOL

I don't consider myself to be a 'positive' Maurice fan, I am a Jets fan. I was certainly not impressed with his credentials and silver tongue before his time in Winnipeg and have been critical of him from year one - noting that after an initial winning streak following his arrival the team fell off the pace again and finished the season with an overall record similar to the record from Claude Noel. I learned to understand more about the man and how deliberate he is with his decisions, being very consistent with his expectations and trusting the process he set in place to a fault (and this may be his biggest weakness). He demands that players have a high standard of professionalism, is clear with his expectations of individuals and protective of the private conversations he has with them about their play. Players get rewarded by putting in the work and doing what they are asked to do - veterans serve as an example by their consistency and commitment to the system. If too many players on a team (5/20ish) start cutting corners on the system then you have no team.
It is a results game and I have previously stated my expectations but will repeat them. 1st or 2nd in North, win first round with competitive 2nd round or beyond.
To answer your question its because he has never won a cup. There has been a total of 5 olympics with NHL participating and 3 coaches have had the opportunity.
1998 he was very young and new, not really an opportunity at that time - Crawford
2002 - Quinn high profile coach in center of universe, Maurice pulls a team together that reaches the cup final, loses to Detroit
2006 - Quinn (Maurice had been out of leaugue and was hired by Toronto that fall)
2010 - Babcock (Maurice saddled with another struggling goalie)
2014 - Babcock (Maurice gets hired by Jets) |

Babcock was a great coach. It was not until he became an egomaniac that he had to be let go. I guess all the positive media attention got to his head and he started thinking he was god. |

What I think we should do Ross77 is purchase Maurice a meat grinder for Christmas because he likes the grind.
I will also dedicate the following link to Maurice, it has the best grinding songs:

I bet he and Noel would have made for a great tandem, one likes to reference pizza and the other would be great at grinding the cheese. |

When the GM goes out and signs Lewis and Thompson, he has a certain expectation that they will see the ice. It is quite possible that they signed here for the opportunity to play. The coach has to play the cards he is dealt.
IT'S NOT A PERFECT WORLD.
I'd be happy to see Thompson be put on waivers and claimed.

Probably more like 70%. I also own when I’m actually wrong.
You managed to flip flop on Niku like 4 times in the last year, and see that as just fine |

To be fair, this is more due to him being a garbage person than it is his coaching ability. |

No one signed Lewis, he was on a player tryout deal. No one would’ve signed Thompson.
I can also say, when a GM drafts a player the expectation should be that they play when ready, well we have a few ready. |

I am not convinced that any of our prospects would tip the scales so much but they have to be rushed into the lineup. The team is winning. Nothing right now is worth compromising their development whether that is skills from practicing with the team, physical development, emotional adjustment, or learning to be a better professional.[url] |

On a separate topic - Julien fired in Montreal.
If the players don't perform, coach takes the fall, doesn't matter how good of a coach you are, or your track record! Maybe too many youngsters playing key roles?
Wonder if Carey Price is still "Carey Price"? To my way of thinking, Hellebuyck, Price and Vasilevsky have been the three best tenders in the league lately. (stepping out on the limb) |

I have no issues with Thompson or Lewis as role players who log around 9 minutes a night. Better for Gustafsson and Vesa to play high reps with the Moose. Besides, their skating is still nowhere near NHL level yet. Both were gaining confidence playing a large role overseas before joining the Jets, and they need to go back to that role to further their developement.
Heinola, Stanley, and Harkins are all being under-utilized in my opinion, and have earned increased TOI and responsibilities. Beaulieu should not be in the lineup. That seems clear to everybody it seems. I respect his work ethic, but there are options available right now that are far better than him. |

I might have/would have said that about Gus's and Vessy's skating last year, but they are different players this season, when given the chance. Especially Vessy - he is ready for the big show IMO.
Defense? I'm good with:
Morrissey-Poolman
Frobert-Pionk
Stanley-DeMelo
Beaulieu as the 7th with Samberg and Heinola playing
big minutes with the Moose. Anyone see the Moose - what
about Chisholm?
The developmental minutes with the Moose should pay big dividends in the long run when injuries occur - and injuries will occur. |
