Just saw the update poor ice conditions due to the Sun... one has to wonder when bad conditions on the outdoor joke games will cost a player their career or a big time long term injury. At least indoors they can maintain great ice quality for the most part as per NHL standards. - LordHumungous
Bet you that wouldn’t happen if the NHL adopted non-guaranteed base salaries similar to what the NFL has where injury money and signing bonuses are guaranteed, but base salary is not. - bloatedmosquito
Get rid of the salary cap, and get rid of guaranteed contracts. Then they could have paid Lui a $36m signing bonus his first season and realized it was a huge waste, and cut him loose.

NHLPA would never go for it, but ya, something like that or restructuring contracts would change the landscape.
Then again it would just give GMs another out from signing terrible contracts, so who knows? - NewYorkNuck
I know but this whole mail-it-in attitude while making millions is BS. The more I read about NFL contract structure the more I like it.
People used to say that players get paid because of the risks. Very true, but that’s changing with focus on limiting concussions, training methods, and the shifting to a more speed and skill based game. Just looking at the average age of players and the amount of guys playing well into their 30s and 40s now. Pretty impressive.
If anyone’s interested in weird hockey stats you should have a look here.
What do you mean? It’s relative. The average NHL salary for a player has been on a steady increase over the years and has now climbed to about $3 million USD per year. Salaries in the NHL range from a low of $700,000 to a high of $12.5 million/year.
A portion of a players contract would be considered ‘base’ and the rest would be split into categories like injury payment, signing bonus, etc. All guaranteed except for the base salary.
Nowadays your toughness has to come from your better top six players, not fighting toughness, but pushback toughness. You can’t take liberties with guys like MacKinnon and Crosby, they’ll punch you right back and or drop the gloves in rare circumstances.
Boston doesn’t have a “tough guy”, but they have pack mentality, St. Louis doesn’t have a “tough guy”, but they have pack mentality, Colorado doesn’t have a “tough guy”, but they have pack mentality....the Canucks need more dogs and less cats. - Pacificgem
So we are complaining the Canucks don't have toughness because they don't have a pack mentality. Would you like to go watch the pile up at the end of the game yesterday?

Jumping into a scrum and grabbing someone around the neck isn’t toughness, dropping your gloves even if you’re one of the teams top five scorers and punching Fobert in the face is.

one of our best players helps the team a bunch on IR with a broken hand or getting his face punched in and has a concussion.
Better stop drafting good players. Less Petey's More Podkolzin.
Ya I'm not expecting much. Reminds me a bit of Gudbranson talkinjg the big tough talk when he fought that Leafs players can't even remember his name lol
I'm expecting at one point this club will toughen up but at the same time not holding my breath.
I get that Zack isn't the 'enforcer' but someone with a bit of that midset would help.
Half the teams would fold after a few years. - manvanfan
NHL or owners have to get their crap together. When you see Henrique in year two of a five year 5.8 mil deal being sent on waivers to clear cap , then there is a issue. A bigger problem is only 5 teams have the cap space to claim a 26 goal scorer of last year.

Really what are they supposed to do? The players are getting their portion that they earn.
