NHLPA would never go for it, but ya, something like that or restructuring contracts would change the landscape.

I know but this whole mail-it-in attitude while making millions is BS. The more I read about NFL contract structure the more I like it.
People used to say that players get paid because of the risks. Very true, but that’s changing with focus on limiting concussions, training methods, and the shifting to a more speed and skill based game. Just looking at the average age of players and the amount of guys playing well into their 30s and 40s now. Pretty impressive.

A portion of a players contract would be considered ‘base’ and the rest would be split into categories like injury payment, signing bonus, etc. All guaranteed except for the base salary.
Nowadays your toughness has to come from your better top six players, not fighting toughness, but pushback toughness. You can’t take liberties with guys like MacKinnon and Crosby, they’ll punch you right back and or drop the gloves in rare circumstances.
