This is a significant issue and helps explain many of the recent failures. The lack of a top-6 centre, no elite forwards, and sluggish defensemen limit the teams ability to drive play against stable defensive systems. This has led to their unfavourable style of trying to amass innumerable perimeter shots, which, when the opponents D systematically constrain the Habs power forwards, only serves to inflate the shot count, while providing few high-percentage chances.
Looking across the North Division, five of the other six franchises each have 2 centremen better than Danault, who despite being rated as a 3C, is forced into first line duty. Imagine the improvement if Price and Drouin were removed (along with their contracts), Danault were shifted to 3C and any of Backlund, Draisaitl, Dubois, Horvat, Lindholm, Matthews, McDavid, Pettersson, Scheifele or Tavares filled the 1C and possibly 2C slots.
Fortunately, the huge start and team depth should enable them to withstand any charge the limping Flames can make, and the Sens and Canucks look lifeless. The dilemma might be the increasing likelyhood of being matched against Toronto in the 1st round. This being said, even if this should occur, just like last season, many upsets evolve early in each season's playoffs.
As a side note, most members of the hockey fraternity see it as unlikely either Suzuki or KK become gifted 1C. Both were drafted with great potential, but like Galchenyuk, they were rushed to NHL in an effort to spare Bergevin's job, preventing them from developing the tools, hockey sense and insights required to excel at the highest levels of the NHL. They may be good players, but do not expect them to lead the team forward as offensive stalwarts or defensive juggernauts; KK will likely level off as a 40-50 point 3C, and Suzuki still has the promise to be a 60-70 point 2C. - Jackie Daytona
I certainly agree with many points, but I think some of them are pessimistic. I still think the sky is the limit with Suzuki, we're getting down on them now, but in last years play in round, him and KK dealt with Crosby and Malkin and they didn't even have as strong of a team as they do now. I think Suzuki can become as good as Patrice Bergeron, who I would consider a borderline elite center. He won't be as explosive as Matthews or McDavid, but he also won't be as expensive either (hopefully). Danault and Price suck, no disagreements there, I think Danault should be playing with the 3rd line wingers. Price should be getting 30-40% of starts instead of the 60% he's getting now or whatever the breakdown was. I don't think Drouin is a major problem anymore, obviously I'd rather have Sergachev, but it can't be undone.
As for the perimeter shots, I think this one is on Julien. With the personnel they have, there is no (frank)ing reason they shouldn't be able to sustain pressure in the offensive zone and score off of the cycle. Instead they're almost always scoring off of a rush, which while pretty, makes them one dimensional. Also, the top 4 D of Weber, Petry, Chiarot, and Edmunson is definitley slow, hopefully Romanov keeps pushing for ice time.
Overall I think they're slumping more than anything, I think Julien needs to make adjustments. They still scored 3 last night, if Price was half decent or they took less penalties, they could have won. |

I think we all no this team has some limitations but that does not mean they do not have the potential to be a very good team.
IMO they are so soft getting the puck out of their zone.
The weak plays and clearing attempts lead to give away's that have cost this team dearly.
if they can clean up that mess and make stronger attempts to clear the zone they might get back to winning.
costly give a ways to guys like Mathews, Tavares and McDavid will burn you more times than not.
My 2 cents anyhow. |

Lehkonen OUT - Karine Hains
As the habs writer, im curious if uou think the habs will have an easy yime with the lowly sens or will the habs lavk of high end talent and a top 6 centre cause issues again tonight?
Do you feel the habs are better off with journeyman jake allen in net or the overpaid, inconsistent and frequently quite bad carey price would be the better option?
Bug game for the habs. A win would vault them into third place.
Thanks in advance. |

According to Engels, games played on emergency recall by Perry do count against his 10 games limit before requiring waivers to go back to the taxi squad. Tonight will be game 10, meaning that if they want to put him on the TS, he’ll have to clear waivers again. |

The lowly Sens did beat the Leafs last week btw
The Canadiens have got a good centre line, one with promise that hasn’t matured yet. Growing pains are part of the process and I think you’re harsh for making such a judgement on Suzuki and Kotkaniemi so soon. Let’s revisit this in a couple of years shall we? I do however believe that the Habs will need a veteran centre before the trade deadline if they are to have a chance in the playoffs, you can’t have success in the playoffs if you’re always chasing the puck after losing the draw time and time again. |

yeah I think you're going a little strong there, they might not have a McDavid but there is talent on that roster..
