Tatar Kotkaniemi Anderson needs to happen, the sooner the better - obie
Suzuki is an intelligent player, but I always thought he is a bit slow on his skates to be a number one. It might never happen, but I still think Kotkaniemi has the potential to become a good 1C because he's faster, robust and has the skills. He needs to take quicker decisions with the puck, but he can learn. I'd really like to see him with Anderson and Tatar, I think that line would be fast, strong on the puck, hard battling. Habs need to concentrate a bit the talent, if not, none of their lines will out-duel top lines from elite teams.
also, the defense is too slow. they never are first on the puck in the d-zone. I like the idea of putting Romanov with Weber. Need a defenseman that can skate on each duo. |

Not disciplined and also not talented enough. I would recommend trying to acquire a top 6 centre. Having zero on your team is detrimental. - prock
This is a significant issue and helps explain many of the recent failures. The lack of a top-6 centre, no elite forwards, and sluggish defensemen limit the teams ability to drive play against stable defensive systems. This has led to their unfavourable style of trying to amass innumerable perimeter shots, which, when the opponents D systematically constrain the Habs power forwards, only serves to inflate the shot count, while providing few high-percentage chances.
Looking across the North Division, five of the other six franchises each have 2 centremen better than Danault, who despite being rated as a 3C, is forced into first line duty. Imagine the improvement if Price and Drouin were removed (along with their contracts), Danault were shifted to 3C and any of Backlund, Draisaitl, Dubois, Horvat, Lindholm, Matthews, McDavid, Pettersson, Scheifele or Tavares filled the 1C and possibly 2C slots.
Fortunately, the huge start and team depth should enable them to withstand any charge the limping Flames can make, and the Sens and Canucks look lifeless. The dilemma might be the increasing likelyhood of being matched against Toronto in the 1st round. This being said, even if this should occur, just like last season, many upsets evolve early in each season's playoffs.
As a side note, most members of the hockey fraternity see it as unlikely either Suzuki or KK become gifted 1C. Both were drafted with great potential, but like Galchenyuk, they were rushed to NHL in an effort to spare Bergevin's job, preventing them from developing the tools, hockey sense and insights required to excel at the highest levels of the NHL. They may be good players, but do not expect them to lead the team forward as offensive stalwarts or defensive juggernauts; KK will likely level off as a 40-50 point 3C, and Suzuki still has the promise to be a 60-70 point 2C. |
