After Matthews, Willy was the Leafs' best player most nights last season. On pace for 35+, maybe 40 goals. Keefe has worked with him going back to the Marlies. In my view, writing him off now would be precipitate, and is an emotion-based fan bias reaction. - Zezel
I'm definitely not writing him off. He's an asset to be managed properly like anyone else in terms of what he brings to the team, and his value. More than anything else, what's going to lead to moving Nylander is the fact they'll need to get Rielly, Andersen (or another tender), and Hyman under contract. They are not letting Hyman walk. This guy just continually proves himself valuable and indispensable in many different situations, over and over again. In many ways, Hyman is the exact opposite of Nylander, kind of like the anti-Nylander. |

Normally, I would agree to not to trade him.
I think they need the cash though and he would be the best choice to go if they are trying to shed significant dollars.
I would rather use that cash elsewhere (Rielly, or a diff #1, Ander5en or a diff starter, and Hyman). |

Nylander can't outscore his shortcomings. Even if he gets 80pts a year he still wont be worth it.
You're right, that money is needed elsewhere. Leafs have been and will be fine without him. |

I sometimes wonder if he is like JVR. I said the Leafs would not miss JVR at all, and they haven't.
I feel like you could put a combo of Robertson, Simmonds, Mikheyev, Hyman on the 2nd line with Tavares and the other 2 on the 3rd line with kerfoot... would anybody really notice a big difference?

So you have to decide if you want to keep doing this, ive made up my mind.
50% of my purpose here is to get my haters wound up lol.. Anyone who treats me respectfully, or even if you want to smack talk im fine with. But some of you have gone off the deep end a long time ago. As hard as it is to accept, your best play is to ignore me. - Arctic_AARDVARK

Hard decisions because of cap crunch is a real consideration, as we saw with Chicago and Tampa. That's definitely a thing. The idea that he should be moved because it's addiction by subtraction even regardless of cap considerations, or that he doesn't have value or that he's overpaid I find unconvincing.

Willy can gain the blueline as easy as almost anyone though. That’s not easy in this league. It’s too early in the season to give up on him IMO.
Don’t forget AA was advocating trading Matthews for Brady Tkachuk 2 years ago so.....

Yeah, he has value, and he is a nice-to-have for sure. In fact, I want them to hold on to him for a while. If he can come back to form, it would only help if they feel they need to get the salary back. I don't like the idea that he should sit. That violates the principle of the pump and dump.
They definitely don't have to make a choice yet. That is a nice bonus of the way the team is playing so far this year. |
