You know, I don't mind him. He's depth, I guess. At a good price for this year. Will never score probably 15 again. Defensively, is what keeps him in the game. Suspect Keefe will push his buttons a bit, like Engvall, to motivate him. |

I just hope that we keep our first rounders for next few years. Need to replenish the pipeline if guys want to leave. No reason in the world for this team to not be a contender every year. |

So, the general feeling here is we should trade Willie for a top 4 D. Which will do what for us precisely? Can't see much on the D end of things we need to repair. Added Brodie, Lehtonen and Bogo in pre season.
And we're certainly not trading him for a goal scorer. - Leafsmart
I don't think that's necessarily what's being said. I think the consideration that is being expressed is that the cap is going to be flat for another year, and the recovery going into 2023 is probably going to be slow as well.
We are up against the cap right now with about 7 regulars making $1.5m or less. At the end of this year, Hyman ($2.25m, probably going to get $4m-ish) is a UFA, and Andersen ($5m, probably due for $5 - $6m) is a UFA. We are also very likely going to lose Holl in the expansion draft. So at some point, we need to come up with money and a replacement top-4 D. Nylander may be the easiest card to play. There may be other options available (Is Sandin ready? Can we get a cheaper goalie to tandem with Campbell effectively? Do we have an appetite to trade Kerfoot and go with Robertson on the top-6 wing instead?).
But moving Nylander is an option that will always remain on the table, because at $7m, he's the most moveable piece that offers the most salary relief, and the least critical (without an NMC) of the top-6 forwards. |

Yeaaah, really is a bummer that the Athletic is subscription based. There are always phenomenal reads on there... It's my first go to when bored at work, then here. 🤦🏻♂️
Unfortunately (probably expectedly), the mindset that Keefe basically admitted to the media that he hates Willie (or at the least was calling him out for being poop) is being pushed by a certain Nylander obsessed poster here.
No one in that room knows willie better than Keefe, he coached him before he was in the NHL. It's insanely stupid to imply that Keefe is hating him to the media and not just saying what everyone already knows, which is that he's good at hockey and there's room to grow in certain facets of his game. - joel878
I just read that article. In the last 40 years only 4 leafs have had more points than Willy at this point in their careers. Matthews, Marner. Vaive and Damphouse. |

The only return for Willie would be high draft picks from a lower seeded team. Can't trade him for a top D or forward of equal value because of the same $ figure. Kerfoot the most likely option. |

I can’t see any deal for Forsberg that the Preds agree to that actually works for us. We are too tight against the cap with Hyman, Andersen and then Rielly coming up and I’m sure there are teams that the Preds could deal with where they don’t have to retain to make it work.
Unless we’re moving Willie or something big, I could see a rental at the deadline using any savings they’ve been able to stitch together.
Not as shiny. |

The problem is that cap growth is going to be slow for a while, through to the end of Auston’s contract. Drafting and bring up players cheap players is key. Trading those types better be a home run. |

That's why I've said previously that we would ultimately lose any trade where Nylander goes out. We're not likely to get back equal value. The only defenseman I can think of that was ever bandied about as an idea was Pesce who makes about $3m less than Willy, but it's not an equitable trade. |
