If they are going to rebuild/retool and trade ekholm, Forsberg etc... i think they would want futures.

it would be good to see a bunch more games from him for sure.
If they want to move on from Freddy they need to know if Campbell is a starter..have to wonder if that was the plan the whole time.
and find another 1b to play with Campbell

Nylander is cost controlled through his "prime." He's about as much as you can get as a "future." |

I dont think I would do a willie for Forsberg trade.
But what about a package of Willie (no Z, not willie's package) and a some other stuff for Forsberg and Ekholm?
Does it make us better?

He's at $6 million a year and signed through next year. Not a fit IMO. Not for salary and not for skill set. If Leafs move out significant salary, it would seem more likely that they would be looking for something else in return. |

Move Andersen to the Canes for 2/3rd rounder.

If I was Dubas I wouldn't trade Nylander for Forsberg..
As far as cap hits go, who else could we move? If we move Kerfoot our C depth takes a hit.. So, if not Kerfoot, would it be a defenseman like Muzzin or Rielly?

you're not alone.. .this is an opportunity for the Leafs to actual get some consequential measurements of what JC can be... against a very strong offensive team ... its not like they are playing plumbers like the Sens or the Habs ... both of whom have largely plumber offenses.
I would give both Andersen and Matthews extra time.. which will pay dividends.

I can’t see Dubas trading for a $6M contract. A rental that we can pay for with savings accrued from taxi squad movement or a cheap addition paid for by $ out. This might change if they’ve definitely given up on signing one of Rielly or Hyman or Freddie. Even Willie for Forsberg puts them into a signing bind if they want to keep him. |

i havent done the math or see anyone that has..but I am assuming they could add a 4-6 mil player at this deadline with only a few minor moves like Vesey etc.. there will only be a fraction of the 6 mil remaining.
imo it only makes sense if you can add a Forsberg without removing a major piece like Willy. you really just wan to add him for this years playoff run.
and since you have him under contract for next season, you have the off season to figure it out. If they burn out again, maybe time to move willy..keep Forsberg...do another re-jig
if they go on a nice run, maybe get to the conf final or finals...well mission accomplished

The catch would be the Preds retain cap here...with the flat cap and most teams not wanting to add salary for a playoff run it’ll be vital for any team to trade for him. |

Any trades, this year in particular, are tough to gauge. With the cap being flat, there are very few teams that could even go for Forsberg without either seeking cap retention (and frequently cap retention that persists beyond the current year isn't particularly palatable; especially not if the cap is staying flat and the retention requested is more than $2m -- frankly the $1.2m that we have retained for Kessel has proven to be a pain in the backside) or trading back salary that the Preds would either swallow or try to additionally flip.
The teams with the best cap situations right now: Carolina, Boston, Columbus,
Edmonton and St. Louis (the former three would be leveraging LTIR).
The teams with the best propsect capital: Carolina & Colorado; Boston, St. Louis, Columbus and Edmonton all have pretty depleted or poor prospect capital.
Montreal is tight to the cap, but they could get into a Forsberg trade if they wanted to try and leverage Tatar as a flip and then include one of their good young prospects (doubtfully Caulfield or Romanov, but maybe Guhle, Primeau or Mysak) as keys to a deal.
The Leafs would have to compete similarly - but I think as soon as they enter into the conversation about salary retention, Nashville will find better offers. |

Not keen on trading Robertson or Sandin to bring in scorers that are not bargains. I don't see Nashville as a good trading partner for the Leafs. Keep the young cheap talent. I can see the Leafs scooping up a player like Corey Perry if Habs are out of it at the TDL.

Yup and people think that they would be married to Forsberg...they can flip him after this year if they wanted.
Plenty of options but they also don’t need to have a full set plan for next year right now. They can think this year. |

The leafs have so many of these guys.
IMO the fit is obvious for a talented top 6 forward.
We have enough depth. |
