I readily admit that I don't know much about Brett Connolly, but he has one more point than MDC in 2 more GP. And he plays on the fourth-highest scoring team in the league.
Maybe he's an upgrade defensively? He's also signed for two more years at $3.5M so not really sure where that rumor is coming from. - eichiefs9
Connolly is far better than his numbers in Florida suggest. He’s a legit scoring threat at evens, and is adequate defensively. What’s more, Pageau is exactly the sorta pivot Connolly thrives with. It’s a match made in heaven, and I can totally understand Lou’s interest.

He was a great player for the caps. Not sure if it’s his linemates or what in Florida but he may just need a change of scenery. Not sure what the hell Florida is thinking with Komarov being part of the trade though?
Is Hickey even an option? Haven’t heard anything about his status. I mean obviously it’s not ideal he just seems to be completely off the map. - Cptmjl
I don't think Trotz ever had the confidence in Hickey and I can't blame him.
I believe at this point he's on the Taxi Squad so yes he would be an option and that's why I think D depth won't be over looked at the trade deadline imo.

The ‘everything must go’ tier
Thomas Hickey: The Isles have no defensive depth, but they’d still wheel Hickey in any trade if they could. He has one more year at a $2.5 million cap hit, and the Isles would desperately love the space going into another tight offseason. If there’s a way to make the money work and bring back a veteran forward or defenseman with a year or two left on his deal, the Isles might consider that to have a player Barry Trotz feels more comfortable playing.
The ‘throw-in’ tier
Sebastian Aho: If the Isles are looking for more reliable D depth, Aho would hit the waiver wire and drop to the taxi squad. We’re going on three years since he played an NHL game, and even though he’s signed for next season, there doesn’t seem to be much of a place for him.

Wouldn’t surprise me either way. We need depth at both positions but you are correct if we had an injury to our blue line we would be in a world of crap. Almost wish they were working someone into the lineup a little even though it’s a bit more difficult with the whole taxi squad bs and players having to clear.

Exactly why d Depth is a need, even more so than a 3rd line winger. Which, don't get me wrong I would love Connoly over MDC, but I think our D needs to be addressed first.

Agreed, going to be interesting what they do at or near the deadline.

We can get Connolly and move MDC to the 3rd pairing. His skating falls somewhere between Rich Pilon and Ken Daneyko.
The Ladd contract is the worst in sports history. It's dead money for the next 3 years. Getting paid for doing absolutely nothing. We cant sign our own players because of this joke contract. Retire already. Nobody wants you.

I don’t think he’s even playing in the ahl. At least last I checked a couple weeks ago he wasn’t.

I have a feeling he will be exiled to Robidas Island (LTIR) next year.
I think Connolly is more of a change of scenery trade hoping he regains some of his scoring. He was a pretty good player for the capitals. - Cptmjl
I guess, but at $3.5M for two more years it seems like a big risk for a team with no cap space. They'd have to take back Komarov and I can't imagine that scrub (frank) is a fit with an offense-first team like FLA
