Sure, the team might believe that, still doesn't change the fact that Hall will be the one deciding which one he waives for. - r8edr
True.
But its buffalo.
One of if not the worst team in the league.
Hes waiving it. |

We managed to convert him into a 3rd overall pick, so I believe we won that trade. - Atomic Wedgie
Thornton/Matthews/Galchenyuk. 2 1's and a 3. Come on Keefe. Make it happen. Drop that scrub Marner. |

It's a competitive league. Contenders don't come out and crush teams and pitch perfect games all season. They find ways to win. Although the Leafs did totally demolish Edmonton, and they deserved a point or two against Vancouver recently. I know it's hard as Leaf fan to get your hopes up, but they are a team having their best run in a HUNDRED YEARS man. They are a contender. To say they aren't is honestly silly at this point. - Zezel

You mean hall would rather play for a last place team instead of a potential playoff team? - Fakepartofme
I never said that he would rather stay in Buffalo. Just that he'll get to choose which offer he will waive for. Many teams may put in an offer, but it doesn't mean that Buffalo will get to choose the best one.

You see my drunken friend, that’s why your loser team will always be a loser team: you’re afraid of making a winning move. Watch and take notes. And please let me know if I’m going too fast.
First of all, Sabres are desperate enough to have to deal with a GM much smarter, you’ve seen the pictures. Hall has a NMC, wants to be on a winner - so Leafs it is.
Second, he just has to retain as much salary necessary to make it work for the Leafs, I don’t know if that’s $4 or $5M. Pegula doesn’t care about money. Sure he’s paying for half a dozen ex coaches and GM, laid off half the office staff on day one of the pandemic and just sold off his restaurants.
Third, they’ll take Kerfoot and a few years of $3.5M to build around and a late second pick for the future.
That’s how Dubas rolls
I forgot that they also get Lili but they might not want him after they see where he ended up on MIB”s list. |

As leafs fans we’re probably a bit traumatized by past trades of first round picks. But if you think you’re close enough to contend you have to go for it. The Penguins traded away alot of first rounders but they won.
Where we are in the standings our first round pick isn’t much more than a second rounder. - shack67
My thoughts exactly.
Though I'll be completely honest, if I were in your shoes, I'd consider it an overpayment too |

Yes they did. Totally. And we loved it.
But
That didnt help them these past 2 games.

It’s a pretty good argument... - Steven_Seagull
In a year where you're stuck in a single division with very poopty teams?
Nah, it kind of sucks as an argument. |

No, our regular season record gives us a very good shot at the semifinals. I’m open to arguments as to who in the Division is better. Note - I’m saying we have a very good shot at getting to the semis. From there anything is possible. Who knows who comes out of the other divisions. Who knows what upsets or injuries happen along the way and who knows what happens if this team does get on a roll.
Given the nature of the playoff structure (we’re playing the teams we ran up this unrealistic regular season record against) and given the way the team has won (not a bunch of 6-5 wins but the lowest GA in the Division) I don’t see how you can discount their chances of coming out of the Division.
Obviously, anything can happen and they can fold again. If that happens then it’s clear there are fundamental flaws in the character of the key players on the team and a major redo s in order. If they go on a 6 or 7 game losing streak I’ll get a big lump in my throat (throat) as well. Until that happens, there’s nothing in the season so far to suggest that anyone is as good and they’re not the FAVOURITES to win the division. - Canada Cup
The original comment was about being "really close" and how it was worth it to "go for it this year" not about making the semi-(frank)ing-finals, bruv. |

The leafs lost 2 in a row the vancouver. We need to revisit expectations...
will they be in the league next year or will they be the first team relegated to the AHL? - TheMussel
Let's do the reverse, Mussel: the Leafs are 18-6-2 right now. Why don't we just hand them the Cup and plan the parade? |

It’s my argument to your statement that “This team has been frequently outplayed and outworked this season by much lesser skilled teams.” - Atomic Wedgie
Guess what happens in the playoffs when you play against legit teams and are outplayed and outworked? |

Leafs are a hot Demko/Price/Helyubuck and a sudden drying up of powerplays, from failing to get out of the North.
Being out-goalied, and unable to score goals will be a familiar story. |

How come you never in Canuck thread? I know it’s cool to be a Canuck fan but are you really a closeted lead fan in disguise? Or maybe this is your Alt account to protect you from the shame of posting in a leaf thread? |

Man I can say this about any team.
How about, "leafs are a hot Andersen and steady powerplay away from the semi finals"
