He's making 1.25 now. With the flat cap, what do you think he'll get up to? 2 mil? Would much rather pay to keep him than have to pay an older UFA, especially with some of the young guys coming up they can round the team out on their ELCs

Maybe it's a bit old school thinking, but the number of current Canucks who have walked in and been top of the lineup players is a bit ridiculous. Nobody has had to work their way up the way Linden, the twins etc had to. Yes Motte fills a need, but it's an easily replaced role if management are doing a good job. That was a long winded way of saying a guy like Podkolzin should be coming in and playing 10 min a night, learning from the guys who have been here a while and work his way up the lineup. When he wins a more prominent role, that's the organizations opportunity to move an expiring contract for a draft pick, or even an established player with term - like Tampa did with Miller.
