Yes, Myers needs to be much better. Agreed. But I would think he needs to play his way out of it. Gus and Ghost get paired together after a PK. Even JJ made a remark about their similar styles. Almost wanted to say that neither one of them play defense. - cdearth23
I look at it this way, the most likely reason to sit Myers is to give him a reset and another chance perhaps with Provy. Otherwise, he would be on the third pairing with fewer minutes. He can play better. He needs to find it and do it consistently, not unlike a lot of young players.

AV said this yesterday in his interview, that Braun and Sanheim have shown good chemistry and AV can mix and match the 3rd pairing, but they need Myers to step up his game and be able to play with Provorov, and he is being benched because he is just not filling that hole left by Nisky. I believe AV/Fletcher will give Myers this month to show he can play that role, and if not I can see Myers being traded for a player that Fletcher believes can play that role more consistently. The good news at least is it appears AV knows that hole is not filled and is killing the Flyers right now. |

I think they do need Myers to eventually step up into that role and it’d be ideal if he did become that 2 dman. However, he’s still a young dman learning the league. I don’t think they will trade him nor should they.

Expecting Myers to just bloom into a top pairing d man is fools gold...and saying the Flyers will ship him off if he doesn't in a month is almost WIP worthy.

Flyers need a solid win where they take a lead and maintain it through the third. Their last two wins were come from behind scrambles against the Pens and Buffalo. They haven’t had a convincing win against a playoff contender in over a month. The last was 7-4 against the Caps pre COVID. Time to get down to business and play with some consistency. |

In my opinion, Myers benching has nothing to do with Myers not being able to fill that hole left by Niskanen. Nothing to do with it. No experienced coach or GM would realistically expect that from a defenseman who is basically a rookie. Myers is being benched because of his own individual play. He has been non-competitive on the puck.
Fletcher is not going to trade Myers for anyone other than a true difference maker and true top pairing defender who is young enough. That player is not likely to be available. Myers is very unlikely to be traded. I disagree completely with your read here.

The Flyers have two options as I see it: 1. fill the top pairing role now, or 2. miss the playoffs this year and try to fill that role in the offseason, unless Myers shows he can do it. If the Flyers choose option 1, Myers would be a valuable trade chip because he is a young RHD defenseman. I mean, do you think any team is going to give up a potential top pairing defenseman for a draft pick? The Flyers have no other defensive prospect in their system that would entice a team to trade with them.

No no no to Myers being traded...in the event he isn’t ready for top pairing duties now, it’s extremely shortsighted to trade him in his 2nd season. I’m fine with getting outside help, but not at the expense of losing Myers. The Flyers have plenty of other assets.

Then you play him on the 3rd pair. Real simple. He shouldn't have been asked to fill that role really. Be stupid to trade him at this point unless it was a slam dunk deal. |

The first step of our defense getting fixed is Provorov needs to play much better, he has not been playing to what he is capable of. The D-zone coverage is an absolute mess, for the forwards included. I know most teams used that F1/2/3 approach in the Dzone but that’s what leads to these wingers in front like TK covering no one. I’d rather have the actual center down there. |

Not sure if you watched AV's interview yesterday, but he spoke at length about why Myers is being benched and his desire to find someone on the team that can play with Provorov, and he pointed specifically to Myers being the only option left. It was pretty direct from my perspective.

The Flyers can make the playoffs without making a single trade. Why would we trade a potential top pairing defenseman for another teams' potential top pairing defenseman?

Myers is not the only option left. Gostisbehere has been playing with Provorov for how many games now? Myers is being benched for the reasons I've given. It's obvious to see in his play. Coaches will accept bad reads or turnovers to a degree. They won't accept for a young player to be non-competitive on the puck.

Well, if I can get a legitimate top pairing defenseman for Myers, why wouldn't I do that? What are the other options here? AV was clear that he has no chemistry on his backend, and he pointed specifically to the fact that up to now now one seems to be able to consistently play with Provorov. If I can trade Myers to get better, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Clearly everything and it likely will. The forwards won't even help this clearly struggling blueline, that's what is aggravating about this team D. Upgrading the blueliners won't help this team until the forwards are willing to help out.
Losing Faith in AV, benching Myers in favor of any of Gost, Hagg, Braun or Gus is shameful. I think he's already losing the team, but that's more an indictment on the players than even on AV and he's got plenty of blame as well.
Things are looking bad in Flyerland...I expect an easy win for the Caps and they will lead from begin to end. No reason to be optimistic about this team, they're not playing well in any facet and their talent and prospect pool is also overrated. - eabrenner
With the way they have played so far, they are fortunate their record and spot in the standing isn't in terrible shape.
Outside of a handful of players (Farabee, JVR, Couturier) majority of the roster is underachieving.
The big concern is the mix on the backend. It isn't good. A substantial upgrade is imperative. I do not have any confidence Fletcher will be able to make a solid trade. He's mismanaged the blueline terribly. Bringing back Hagg and Braun very questionable. Signing Gustafsson please. Losing Friedman for nothing and moving Morin to the wing. It has pretty much been a disaster. |

How old is that player? What is his contract status? The Flyers should not be trading Myers for an older 30 ish defenseman. The team is not at that point. It would be a colossal mistake. Fletcher is smarter than that. The odds of a true difference maker becoming available, is very slim. Becoming better is relative. How much better. The other options are what it has always been. Continue to develop players. |

This first line is so true. Despite the struggles, this is a playoff team. The whole point of adding at the trade deadline would be to get further in the playoffs, not just to make it there.
I have no interest in trading off core/future core pieces from the roster right now.

Agreed. So many of their issues that is even affecting individual players is their lack of attention to detail defensively. Team wide. Improve that and with their offensive talent, they'd be a good team. Not in the upper echelon but in that second tier. There isn't going to be a player available at the deadline that would make a bigger impact than that. There isn't going to be a difference maker available. |
