On Thursday I was watching my team Ac Milan play Manchester United in Europa League action.

Game was in England, so English commentators. Milan's English defender Tomari was walked on by a Man U player like he was a pylon, Tomari chased him down and made a sliding tackle in the box in a last ditch effort and succeeded.

The commentators called it a "master class in defending". Shaking my head and wondering if that's what they call defending in England.

I grew up watching Paulo Maldini play for Milan that had a really low tackle's per game number but might be the one of the best defender in history because he was never chasing a player and you never got by him.

Long story short, that was a horribly ugly defending by Hughes on the 2 on 1 but he got lucky.

Here are the challenges for Jim this off season:

Demko is a pending RFA with arbitration rights, who will be an UFA for the 2022-2023 season. So, they can qualify him and try to get a contract done. If it doesn’t they can go to arbitration, and he will probably get $5ish million for 1 year (just a guess, based on his performance so far). At the end of that deal, he becomes a UFA if they can’t agree on an extension.

They could go medium term, 3-5 years, he’s a UFA at the end, no idea what he would push for, but certainly more than Holtby is earning. I think a 5 year deal would cost them $35m.

If they go long, they can get the AAV down by providing the certainty of employment. They’re all risky in their own way.

Personally, I think they’ll go the one year route and figure it out later.

I think a lot of players will take fair bridge deals just because of available money to the league. Demko can take a 2 year 4.5 and on the second year sign his long term deal when there is a lot more money available .
