Wedgie’s hot take:
We have already locked up a playoff spot.
Put Matthews on LTIR for his wrist injury, use the cap space to add a 2nd line winger and a 3~4 D.
Take Matthews to the same faith healer that will cure Kucherov on the first day of the playoffs. - Atomic Wedgie
Lol been thinking that for a while now |

Here's the really dirty play where Matthews was injured (combination trip and slew foot) by Andersson. No call, no suspension. Can we call up Sabourin next game against the flames to do the same to Johnny Hockey and Tkachuk?

Love the idea
It would be a leafy thing for them to fall off the wagon and not be able to bring Matthews back and miss out on the playoffs.

Why not? Matthews can pull a Patty Kane and the Leafs can add to their roster. If Tampa and Chicago can do it then why can't Toronto? |

What makes the line work is puck possession, retrieval and ability to score from anywhere. When Matthews can’t shoot, they lose a lot of the last bit. Simmonds crashing and screening creates mayhem that doesn’t solve that problem and works better for a less skilled line IMO. Joe does some crease time and is a better passer. I still think if Matthews can’t shoot at an elite level but has his other skills, put a shooter up there.
*I’m all in on rentals - Canada Cup
AM34 and Mitch both excel at puck possession though, don't they? I like Joe enough but I don't think the top line requires another elite* passer beyond Mitch. I'd like to see more of Thornton on Snake's line before Wayne Train returns to see if there's a fit there (I think Kerf already is).
That dimension of "mayhem" and crashing and screening that Simmonds brings to the table can only help a wounded Matthews and presents a much different look than teams are used to seeing from the top line. Simmonds is a shooter, so it seems like a no-brainer if Auston is still plagued by wrist issues. 🤷
* Jumbo's hands aren't what they used to be. |

Yes, please!
I'd love to see Sabourin wrecking players and making this Leafs team instantly nastier. (frank), I'm all for a goon line. Why the hell not? Call Clune up! LET"S GO!!!!
For the record, there is no sarcasm here. At least, I don't think so...?! I can't read myself anymore. FFS. |

Our funnest year was with Orr/McClaren can’t think of their linemate.

What's sad is the level of quality of Leafs' management.
Been saying for 2-3 years that Freddie isn't a top level goalie and that Dubas has made some mediocre decisions on personnel and trades. |

I'm with Wedgie on this one. Jumbo is there to pass sure, but also to be a big body in front of the goalie. With Matthews injury and not being able to shoot, Matthews is the one in front of the net. Taking away the best shot in the league hurts that line - its not on Joe. I wonder if Andersson from Calgary slew footed McDavid and caused a significant injury whether there woud have been a suspension.

Even funnier if you watch your best player take an unpenalized cheap shot that causes a significant injury and shrug your shoulders and say oh well.

Yeah nothing screams I know goalies better than leaf management like endlessly proclaiming that Holtby is still a top 5 goalie. |

I'm not saying it's on Joe: I'm saying Simmonds may be a better fit.
We don't need Joe's passing skills on the top line and I'm not entirely sure how effective he's actually been as the big body in front of the net. Wayne can be that guy and he is a more effective garbage converter.
Continue the Thornton with Snake experiment and see how it goes.
Honestly, if AM34 is truly as wounded as everyone is suggesting, Leafs management should get him the (frank) out of the lineup for an extended period to get him healed before the real season begins.
Do the Leafs really need to finish at the top of the division desperately enough to risk Matthews? I don't think so... |
