Why not? Matthews can pull a Patty Kane and the Leafs can add to their roster. If Tampa and Chicago can do it then why can't Toronto?
- gergeswillems

They need to add a rule that any player not on an ELC needs to play 10% of the regular season to be eligible for the playoffs.

AM34 and Mitch both excel at puck possession though, don't they? I like Joe enough but I don't think the top line requires another elite* passer beyond Mitch. I'd like to see more of Thornton on Snake's line before Wayne Train returns to see if there's a fit there (I think Kerf already is).

That dimension of "mayhem" and crashing and screening that Simmonds brings to the table can only help a wounded Matthews and presents a much different look than teams are used to seeing from the top line. Simmonds is a shooter, so it seems like a no-brainer if Auston is still plagued by wrist issues. 🤷

* Jumbo's hands aren't what they used to be.

I’m not saying Joe is the answer. If Simmonds is a shooter, fine.

Freddy under .900 save percent. Now 48th in the league. Tell me that's not piss poor.
- bixll

Andy isn't going anywhere (bar injury) so I'm thinking the Leafs need to just rotate the goaltending equally until (if and when) the cream rises to the top.

I like Simmonds, but he's not a top6 player anymore.
Slow and lost a step.
Thornton is still very good.

Wedgie’s hot take:

We have already locked up a playoff spot.

Put Matthews on LTIR for his wrist injury, use the cap space to add a 2nd line winger and a 3~4 D.

Take Matthews to the same faith healer that will cure Kucherov on the first day of the playoffs.

Hey Auston, forget the Hart and any other hardware and bonuses.....

I'm not saying Simmonds is the answer either but he is definitely a shooter while Joe is not.

Campbell will get starts when he gets back. If he blows them away, they’ll increase the %. Otherwise, it’s Fred till they’re dead.

I don’t think he’s back next year.

Thornton isn't a Top 6 guy anymore either. He's also slower than Simmonds.

Wayne has scored 5 goals in 12 games while playing 11mins a game. Pretty impressive and he was heating up before the freak injury.

I'll bet he gets a look on the top line.

I'm not saying it's on Joe: I'm saying Simmonds may be a better fit.

We don't need Joe's passing skills on the top line and I'm not entirely sure how effective he's actually been as the big body in front of the net. Wayne can be that guy and he is a more effective garbage converter.

Continue the Thornton with Snake experiment and see how it goes.

Honestly, if AM34 is truly as wounded as everyone is suggesting, Leafs management should get him the (frank) out of the lineup for an extended period to get him healed before the real season begins.

Do the Leafs really need to finish at the top of the division desperately enough to risk Matthews? I don't think so...

Agree with this, also would like to see Sabourin instead of Vesey.

Agree with this, the missed opportunity was MAF. Could have had him plus a pick or two plus salary relief for Freddy in the summer. Vegas tried really hard to trade him.

I'm cautiously optimistic Jack comes back and can start semi-regularly but I'm not holding my breath.

To be fair, it was really hard to predict Fleury's renaissance this season. Plus, one wonders if teams were collectively sticking it to VGK per the whole MAF-Lehner debacle.

Man, that would have been (potentially) sweet though...

I called him to win the Conn Smythe in the prediction thread.

Obviously I am a franking genius.

I was for that move for the Leafs for sure, not sure what else could have been squeezed out of Vegas.

I'm blaming you for not insisting to Dubas that this happen.

In some other simulation, you got through to him and the Leafs cruise to a Cup and every Leafs thread was purely copasetic the entirety of the season.

I don't like Vesey at all.

We have no desire to reward Sabourin for his suspension-worthy level of idiocy.

A "player" like him isn't a disincentive to the other team. In these days of Instigator penalties and antagonists, a guy like Sabourin would cost you more than he'd ever get you. I think a player like him is a welcome mat to doing something to the star players so you can goad him into something stupid.

but I feel as if it is more of an offseason move

Interesting.

Is he still a decent goalie or have age and injuries caught up.
