Absolutely disgusting, but not surprising at all. - JimmyP
It's the worst kept secret in the league. Game management is a thing that only the referees think is the right way to officiate games. Brings back a lot of memories of the Alex Burrows/Stephane Auger debacle |

Tim Peel....see ya later maggot
NHL actually did the right thing for once - eichiefs9
Absolutely the right move. Let’s hope the other zebras take note. |

They'll take note and not say anything out loud, but it won't change they way they see their role in the NHL. |

They won't. They can't get in trouble for something that's impossible to prove without tangible evidence, and that's exactly what happened in this case. Peel just got caught on a hot mic and they had to do "something" to address it. They did the right thing, but it won't stop or deter anyone else from continuing to manage the game they way they currently do.
I wouldn't even call this all that significant. He wasn't technically "fired", he just won't work any games between now and the end of the season. Elliotte Friedman reported just a little while ago that Peel was set to retire after his last game on April 24th. So essentially he'll just collect a paycheck for sitting on his ass for the next month and then retire with his pension. |

Huh. Well that’s a great deal less gratifying. |

You want your first penalty to be a good solid call and yes when you have called 4 in a row on one team you tend to realize it. Perhaps a borderline call isn't called on that team and one is on the other its human nature |

So you’re saying we need to officiate the game robotically? Cause I’d be okay with that.

I second the motion to officiate the NHL with machinegun jubblies |

What should really happen is they should address the idea that was heard on the microphone and address that with all the refs. it's complete B.S |

And if Tom Wilson just happens to get shot in left nut by an accidental discharge, then so be it. |

To add some context to this, Peel was scheduled to retire later this season. His final game was April 24. Still think it’s a big punishment...taking that away from him. |

Correct and on the opposite end of the spectrum are the refs that call everything and there is no game flow and everyone is pissed at the calls, it's a tough line to walk |

The entire thing was peel said he wanted to make a call as they were running around and he wanted to settle the game down which in fact is good game management |

While I won’t deny that the flow of the game will be altered negatively, I will contend that it would be short lived. Within 6 weeks I believe the players would adjust their behaviour accordingly, and game flow would return. |

What they really need to do is get rid of Colin Campbell. He's the worst. I think he must have compromising pictures of Bettman... |

yea they tried that with the new standard of play a few years back and all season they called ticky tac panties and once the playoffs hit and games were tight no one wanted to make the same calls and it all went out the window. I can't stand that a guy can be brained with a high stick and it's 2 minutes and then tapped and it draws a tiny amount of blood and 4 minutes. Also guys get killed from behind on dangerous plays and no call or a minor when those are what can really hurt them |

That's not their role. If players are "running around" but not committing penalties then leave it alone. If there is a penalty then by all means call it, but otherwise it's not their job to manage the game.

Look as an official if guys start getting loose out there you look for a call to settle the game down so it doesn't get out of hand. This is why he said it wasn't much but it calms everyone down and has happened as long as there have been refs and even taught. Everyone is mad cause they finally know about something thats gone on forever |

No, everyone is mad because this shouldn't be going on. This isn't a shock to anyone. Everyone knew this was happening. Stick to calling penalties instead of looking for a reason to call one.
Also he mentions only one team. If he had said he was looking to call any penalty it wouldn't be as bad. He'd still be wrong, but at least it would be more fair. |

Bullpoop if one team is starting to lose control in their actions then you call that to settle them down. It wasn't much but its still game management. If you disagree I welcome you to go to your local association and try reffing some games, not easy. I've had guys that played high level hockey try reffing and they can't believe how hard it is, peel getting axed won't change a thing
We aren't going to agree on this so I'm not going to keep going you have a different point of view and thats fine |
