Not a surprise. This is on par with our 3rd and 4th line player salaries. |

I have way less of a problem with the AAV than I do the term and the protection.
He had 45 points in 69 games last year. If we compare his AAV to Roussel or Sutter or Beagle, then really its more than fair.
The expansion protection is a HUGE fail, there is absolutely no reason to give him that, and the term is way too long. - Codes1087
I have zero problem w expansion protection but it should have been $2.5MM Max |

29 before the start of next season - WhiteLie
I get the logic.
a middle 6 winger plays well w Bo.
Defensively responsible.
Shortish term.
I think the team would be hard pressed to replace him on the open market.
And we sure ain’t seeing much trade action.
People roasted mgmt for letting Tofoli walk and are roasting them for singing Pearson.
Doesn’t seem like a terrible signing to me.

Apparently from Drance he only has some no-trade protection, so doesn't have to be protected. Expansion is moot point though, draft is in a couple months and they'll protect him anyway. The kick in the nuts is that (frank)ing Jimbo found another creative way to make the contract buyout proof. Backloaded with signing bonuses in year three, this team is painful to follow - WhiteLie
The backloaded contracts are on Aquilini not Benning |

yeah I just read that as well. Thats a ton of commitment to a soon to be 29 year old. - Codes1087
Yeah, and I mean its not close to the worst deal, I just cannot fathom why they felt it necessary to do right now. The team is missing the playoffs this year, the cap is flat, move him and pick up something - even if its just a pick to move later at next year's deadline for a playoff push and try to resign him later on |

I assume they didn't do that, because they didn't have confidence it would work.

no it isnt the worst deal at all. 45 points in 69 games is respectable numbers for a 3.25 AAV.
Its Pearson and Toffoli that I would have liked to see Benning give "Veteran" contracts too. Players who can contribute more than just be "good in the room and for the kids". Its the fact that we have 17 mill left, with 2 defenseman coming back and Hughes/Petey still needing contracts, and the likes of Roussel/Ferland/Beagle/LE still counting against our cap. Benning honestly just doesn't seem to have any concrete plan. |

I know, and we don't know how heavily backloaded it is, but I'm not holding my breath that this is a well structured contract. If Aquilini is so concerned about money then why not wait it out. Pearson wasn't going to get more expensive |

Me neither. It's given me a good chuckle while sitting in my truck waiting for my Daughter to get out of school. Nice signing. Good term and money. |

Maybe hes banking on Roussel, Beagle and LE to retire with COVID related injuries.
I have long given up on trying to figure out what the plan is.

Just laughing at those that thought Benning was being smart and lying about wanting to resign Pearson to drive up his trade price. JB will never learn from his mistakes.
Stupid (frank)ing contract given the team's competitiveness and cap situation. |

My prediction is,
he will fit Petey and Hughes in under the 17 mill remaining.
Will lock up Hamonic and Tryamkin to cheap 1 year deals
one of Juolevi/Chatfield will play bottom 6
He will also try and re-sign Vesey/Boyd/Hawryluk to cheap deals.

I don't think any team that it didn't work out for regretted it. Even if you don't want to move him, as a way of maintaining the relationship, I don't think he'd be too hurt if they prioritized locking up Pettersson/Hughes first |

With what money? Unless they're signing them to the mil relief they get from sending Beagle/Eriksson/Rous down, they don't have the cash.
