Maybe hes banking on Roussel, Beagle and LE to retire with COVID related injuries.
I have long given up on trying to figure out what the plan is.

yeah I just read that as well. Thats a ton of commitment to a soon to be 29 year old. - Codes1087
Funny how everyone in here absolutely loved Tyler Toffoli 4x4.25.
I didnt hear how that is too much term for a 28 at the time. |

It is funny that some people thought 3x3 was a good deal for TP and he got 250k over that and they are now freaking out about that 250k over.
Would have preferred to trade him and get assets, but 3.25 for an effected 3rd line guy who can give 2nd line production playing a full season there is not a bad deal. This makes it easier to do what other teams do and have 3 lines that play most of each game, with the lines playing better getting more during that game and a 4th line that plays an energy role. Just like Vegas does. that 4th line has some games where their 4th line plays less then 5 mins each. And they are dominant. - Retinalz
The deal is manageable, but to me, in the aggregate of everything else it just feels like more of the same. There wasn't going to be a bidding war and the Canucks felt it super necessary to lock in a middle 6 winger before seeing how the season and rest of the league shakes out |

Toffoli and Pearson are two very different players. I would have been ecstatic with having Toffoli and 4x4 with no trade protection.
Again, I have less of a problem with 3.25 to Pearson given his 45 points in 69 games last year, than I do the fact that we have 17 mill to re-sign Hughes/Petey/Gaudette/Chatfield/Vesey/Boyd/Hawryluk (cause you know Benning will try and sign the last 4 mentioned above as well). The Trade protection part, and the backloaded part of the contract (will make it very hard to trade) is the part I don't really care for.
He will also need money for Podz ELC, and will most likely try and bring Hamonic and Tryamkin back on cheap 1 year deals.
I stated prior, that Pearson and Toffoli are the "veteran" deals I want him to make, instead of the LE/Beagle/Ferland/Sutter/Roussel type ones that have handcuffed this team.

I get the logic.
a middle 6 winger plays well w Bo.
Defensively responsible.
Shortish term.
I think the team would be hard pressed to replace him on the open market.
And we sure ain’t seeing much trade action.
People roasted mgmt for letting Tofoli walk and are roasting them for singing Pearson.
Doesn’t seem like a terrible signing to me. - dbot

Players with his skill set will still see 3-4m on 3-5 year deals. Pearson is probably in the upper tier of his level and they will see closer to 3.75 even with a flat cap.
I feel if we are looking to compete in 2 years, we have talent that can replace him next season, and surpass him in 2 years for cheaper. |

this is another huge reason.
Why is Benning telling the media they are two years away, then signing a 29 year old to a 3 year contract when he has two "super stars" left to sign with a restricted cap to sign them in.
I don't think anyone in here would be upset if he announced today that he traded Sutter and Pearson for Assets coming back and retained some salary in the process. Its what a proper seller should do given where the team is at currently, and how long he projects this team will take to get back to being competitive. |

Or signing their young stars, key pieces of the core, first. I guess that's what we get with a day by day GM. As long as the owner is happy. |

I think the issue is why not Toffolli who is way better end of story for barely more. Maybe that's just me.

If its between the two deals
Toffoli 4x4 no trade protection
or
Pearson 3 x 3.25 (modified trade protection in first 2 years and a backloaded contract for the 3rd)
I think everyone knows which they prefer.

I see your point with Sutter,
But I disagree with your point on Pearson. Didn't the media speculate that there was a ton of interest in Pearson, or was that Benning driving up the media price for himself?

garunteed that Bo had a huge part in this. They are super close off the ice as well, and all things considered, their line is actually very good at shutting down the other teams top lines.
I remember earlier in the year when they played the Oilers, and Bo and Pearson were monsters at shutting down Mcdavid. The next game, Oilers had last change, and McDavid demolished the Miller/Petey/Boeser line at5v5 |

Doesn't matter we don't need Pearson. We need a 975k guy to take his place cause of all the garbage Benning has signed and continues to sign. Amazing he has a job still but it's not my team. |

It's a tough one as I was on board with moving Sutter/Pearson as well. Having said that retaining Pearson for now helps Bo's line. With Pearson gone Basically Bo starts from scratch again so I could see some logic there. This basically helps the top 6 for next season where obviously they hope Pods slots in. If not then they can work on it from there. |

Brett Connelly was moved for 2 throw aways and it still cost them a pick and prospect. Shows the market. |
