Yeah, and I mean its not close to the worst deal, I just cannot fathom why they felt it necessary to do right now. The team is missing the playoffs this year, the cap is flat, move him and pick up something - even if its just a pick to move later at next year's deadline for a playoff push and try to resign him later on

The mean average nhl contract is 2.98. He's been one of our better middke six guys. I'd be way more more worried if it was our bottom 6, outside of motte and gaudette id like to see an overhaul.

Virtanen's buyout at the end of the season is 50K and 500K the year after. So there's 2M in cap space. LE's buyout is 2M in savings.

There is Pearson and Podz contracts right there pretty much.

If Sutter is re-signed and Green re-signed will be what saddens me the most.

No no it's doesn't. 11 pts top 6 mins 33 games. Good bye wtf
No wonder we suck so bad like Frick. Open a spot up

Highlanders 16 pts at 20 years old. Let's.get ahead.of the curve and go 5.5 x 8 based on potential. Fck

There are a few ways to make money happen for the Canucks – but the questions will be is Jim going to make them, and is Aqua going to green light them?

Buying out Loui saves 2 mil (4 mil cap hit), costs 1 mil in 2022
Buying out Holtby saves 3.8 mil (500k cap hit), costs 1.9 mil in 2022
Buying out Virtanen saves 2.5 (50k cap hit), costs 500k in 2022 (would rather not, TBH)
Sending down Rous and Beagle saves ~2.2 mil overall
Can sweeten a deal for Seattle to take a player as well, if they want to go that route.

There are options, I just don't really trust Benning to make the right ones.

Drance coming with some fire:

Fundamentally the Pearson deal leaves the Canucks with about $23 million in salary cap space this offseason, with which to sign two star-level players to second contracts that project to take up the majority of the space remaining, upgrade their middle-six forward group significantly, reconstruct their blue line and rebuild their bottom six.

It’s going to be difficult. And if the club is going to qualify for the playoffs next season, it’s going to require a level of creativity and ruthlessness in utilizing every lever at the club’s disposal — buyouts, the trade market, navigating the expansion process intelligently — that the Canucks front office has, frankly, never demonstrated in the Benning era to this point.

Players with his skill set will still see 3-4m on 3-5 year deals. Pearson is probably in the upper tier of his level and they will see closer to 3.75 even with a flat cap.

I feel if we are looking to compete in 2 years, we have talent that can replace him next season, and surpass him in 2 years for cheaper.

- Retinalz

Tough to say, I'm not confident we'll see many contracts with that length of term for this crop of UFA's. Granlund is someone that comes to mind that has a better track record points-wise, younger, and still was squeezed for a 1 year deal... its going to be a weird era until revenues catch up for some teams so I don't really know what market value will be, but seemed worthwhile to wait and see

Career high in minutes this year, low production. Obviously the hope is he gets pushed down, but thats a banking a lot on ELC guys to produce since you can't really afford to bring in anyone else until you move money out

I think that's one of the bigger WTF things about this signing. There's going to be a lot of good, similar players available on 1-2 year deals come summer. It just feels like an overreaction to losing guys last year.

It certainly does. It also ticks off the least pressing issue for next season. Looks like Benning likes to start at the bottom of his list of things to do. Very innovative.

I was being sarcastic.

His .33 PPG isn’t likely to improve sharply from this point on. Plus if Podkolzin is going to play in the top 6 and Höglander is going to stay in the top 6 then he truly will be a 3rd line winger with whatever that guys name is who you said, or Gaudette or someone less qualified.

This deal smells like Sven Baertschi’s 3 year $10m all over again. Let’s hope he lasts more than one year before being demoted.

I feel like his strategy is to sign everyone else first, so that when he starts negotiating the important contracts, he can be like "well this is all the cap space I have left". This is a 4D chessmaster at work

A good agent will counter "Okay will take that for 1 year and look at it again next year"

I was being sarcastic about the Canucks winning the draft lottery as well.

Canucks just have so many question marks and JB isn't really clearing many up very fast.
