So with Podkolzin done will he sign? Or is the world championship going to prevent? - CanuckDon
Under contract until April 30th, or if called up to World Championships the end of May. |

Ya I remember that as well. Would be nice to have a look at him for a few games but it seems unlikely - CanuckDon

Jim Benning on Podkolzin: He's under contract until April 30th. If he's going to be on the World Championship team for Russia, we won't get him until the end of May. #Canucks |

Sounds like Beagle's positive covid test was a false positive.
10 players showed up today feeling healthy, after the facility was closed for an extra day. 15 more better show up tomorrow otherwise the first game on Friday is going to uglier than expected |

Obvious hyperbole aside, you're right. It's an apples to oranges situation and yes, bad Canadian teams are not high on free agents wishlists aside from maybe a hometown boy wanting to come home. It's not fun being on a bad hockey team under the Canadian microscope.
Meanwhile Tampa is a prime destination for players.
Detroit is a harder sell, great history there but not exactly the best city to live in for a young rich athlete. - Nucker101

I personally don’t care about a year on his ELC...more concerned about years of control. I think he will be more prepared if he gets a feel for the NHL this spring and then knows what to work on over the summer. But I certainly understand your perspective |

It would be nice to see him, but would it be worth burning a year of his ELC?
Would most likely be only a few weeks of play... |

Exactly! Why make it an issue? Especially since the many, many overpaid contracts were actually justified to get players to sign here. The cost of doing business in this market.
Which also means that the mismanagement of the cap isn't actually mismanagement. JB has actually managed the cap magnificently if you factor in the Canadian city surcharge. - RealityChecker

Fair, different circumstances
I’m looking forward to seeing him, as I was OJ, EP, BB, Demko and QH...
Just think this is a train wreck of a season and having a potential young star coming in at the end of the season isn’t likely to either sell more season tickets or help the player that much.

I’m not sure, Whitey could probably correct, but I don’t think the team would get the same benefits - arbitration rights and offer sheet protection with an international player like they do with college players leaving school early. |

Makes thing easier on the future cap problem-that-isn't-a-problem-per-se problem...
I mean, he's playing against men in the KHL. It's a jump in skill for sure, but it's not like he's coming from college or junior.
If they hadn't burned a year of Hughes' deal, they'd still have him on his ELC next year and it'd be a much easier thing to navigate right now. (Though in saying that I know things are different with college guys signing/not signing.) |

I think the contractual benefits are the same, but leverage-wise it doesn't matter because international players tend to remain property longer than domestic. The attraction with college guys was to tempt them if they were considering waiting the 4 years to UFA, whereas Podkolzin would still be Canucks rights for comfortably longer so they hold leverage (thinking Kaprizov in Minnesota)
Edit: Kaprizov was younger than I thought, but link here to the contract stuff. Same benefits of earlier UFA and arbitration, etc. https://www.hockeywildern...p-space-fiala-eriksson-ek |
