Solid day by Benning. Got rid of Gaudette, potentially acquired another Tyler Motte, acquired a draft pick in a draft that will be wild. I'll take it.

When will people learn that no one wants our trash? Stop freaking out ffs

He's not getting fired. Ownership and management already knew this season was going to be a step back. Next year they'll rebound back to where they were before this season, then the following season we'll see the team really take the next step forward. The plan is in place, if they fail to bounce back next season then sure his seat will get hot. But the goal next year is likely just to compete for the playoffs, the following season is when it's playoffs or bust.

Covid really threw a wrench into everything and delayed the original plan by a couple of years, it is what it is.

I think the contractual benefits are the same, but leverage-wise it doesn't matter because international players tend to remain property longer than domestic. The attraction with college guys was to tempt them if they were considering waiting the 4 years to UFA, whereas Podkolzin would still be Canucks rights for comfortably longer so they hold leverage (thinking Kaprizov in Minnesota)

Edit: Kaprizov was younger than I thought, but link here to the contract stuff. Same benefits of earlier UFA and arbitration, etc. https://www.hockeywildern...p-space-fiala-eriksson-ek

Exactly! Why make it an issue? Especially since the many, many overpaid contracts were actually justified to get players to sign here. The cost of doing business in this market.

Which also means that the mismanagement of the cap isn't actually mismanagement. JB has actually managed the cap magnificently if you factor in the Canadian city surcharge.

lol its an admitted wrong with none of the justifications you harp on. No one is making excuses even the offender. But hey let's not have that get in the way of your deadbeat narrative.

It's not an issue unless he keeps making the same mistake over and over and over again
- golfingsince

The "over again" ship has sailed or in your case that train left the station. In the end ownership, who's fitting the bill, was willing to pay and is happy with the general direction despite these mistakes.

Fair, different circumstances

I’m looking forward to seeing him, as I was OJ, EP, BB, Demko and QH...

Just think this is a train wreck of a season and having a potential young star coming in at the end of the season isn’t likely to either sell more season tickets or help the player that much.

- SlightlyOffside

The season Boeser came in on was the worst we had in many years. I hear ya, but a full spring/summer training with the big boys could pay off next year, i do think that's the strategy development wise

Starting from scratch is a way better position than getting handed the keys to a team full of overpaid washed up vets full of NTC's with a hands-on owner watching over your shoulder.
- Nucker101

Look at the tampa bay 2010 roster when he took over. He was gifted stamkos/hedman, ill give you that, but literally the rest pf the team is drafted/traded and developed by him and the staff he placed in syracuse.

Jim Benning on Podkolzin: He's under contract until April 30th. If he's going to be on the World Championship team for Russia, we won't get him until the end of May. #Canucks

That was asked in today's presser. Logistically Podz will have to arrive in Vancouver April 16 to do his 2 week quarantine. I'm not sure if KHL players get the 7 day exemption. He can then wait watching team vids on systems play and role.

If not picked for Worlds then he'd be in prime position to sign and start playing May 1.

Two weeks of games in packed schedule with an extra body that can adjust to NHL play is a good benefit.

You still pondering relocating to Australia?
- Marwood

Yeah, but I'm hoping to spent 4-5 months a year here, my buddy has a basement suite that sits empty that I can use for the summers here.

Lol there you go. Let’s check back in in two years and see if Bennings plan has worked

If the stock market crashes or something he might need another 2-3 years.

What the hell, give Benning a Rick DiPietro type deal.

Or a modest slow down in the real estate market! That might be good for an additional 3-4 years

any vinyl I may have is buried in my mother’s basement or attic. None of it worth a nickel.

He will calm down and not run out of time if he has a 10 year contract. Let’s go Aquilini!

I was in a hockey pool in 1988, the rule was you could trade anything for a player as long as you got the approval of the majority, I successfully traded 5 of my step-father's Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin albums for Rick Tocchet.

If it wasn't a fantasy pool, it doesn't hold any clout here.
