Seems like a trend this year. All of these teams finding loopholes but the only rule change is to make sure the Rangers can’t get their greasy hands on a lotto pick again. smh. |

Why? It's also a gamble that would allow a player to potentially get to free agency. |

yeah, it's 100% certain that Caps have already worked out an extension with Ovechkin and won't sign it until after the expansion draft, so they can protect 7 other forwards instead
I guess Seattle could waste their expansion pick on him if they wanted to but that would seem silly |

As I understand it, those changes don't take effect until next year, and previous wins don't count. So we would need to win it twice more in the future before we would be impacted.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The 2021 NHL Draft Lottery will be reduced from three drawings to two as part of changes announced Tuesday.
The changes, approved by the NHL Board of Governors, will determine the order of the NHL Draft for the teams that do not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Two other changes will begin with the 2022 NHL Draft Lottery:
-- Teams will be restricted from moving up more than 10 spots if it wins one of the lottery draws.
-- Teams cannot win the lottery more than twice in a five-year period. Wins in the lottery prior to 2022 will not be counted toward this total.

That's an interesting question...
Do players become FAs July 1st this year? or is it still delayed like last year?
The expansion draft is July 21st, so if a player is a FA, I'm not sure Seattle could select him because technically, he isn't attached to any team. |

Thanks for the info. That answers all of my questions. These rules won't impact the Rangers since they'll be competing for a Cup for the next 10+ years.

Then it would be a wasted pick because he would just walk away on the 28th.

This is going to open up a whole new can of worms. Considering the same teams tend to be bad year in and out, it's gonna open up a Pandora's box where a team like the Pens have a bad year due to injury or whatever and are guaranteed to win the loterry because so many other teams can't. At least the slate starts fresh when the rules start.

there's only one incentive that exists for Seattle to take Ovechkin, and that would be it would give them the option to give him an 8 year contract
but, no chance he is leaving Washington
I also think it's probably the reason the Oilers haven't signed RNH yet, just waiting for expansion draft to pass to sign an already worked out extension

Rangers doing the same thing with Jack Johnson, can't risk Seattle taking him. Wait till after to give him that new 3 year deal |

Until yesterday when someone brought him up, I had completely forgotten about JJ. As soon as he's healthy, you bet your ass he'll be back in the lineup |

Is Seattle going to get one decent player? A top 6 forward or a top 4 defenseman? I’m starting to really doubt it. They’re gonna be full of goons and reclamation projects.
