Hope it’s not another Patrick Marleau case. The Pens are playing well and hope he can score a few goals and play a good two way game for us.
One last cup for Carter before retiring. - Barnaby36
That’s my fear. This screams Patrick Marleau/Brendan Morrow for me. Storied veteran leadership guy who’s way past is prime and is now a fourth liner but we got him to play the top 9.
EDIT: there’s some hope here that he’s putting up 1.6 pts/60 at ES on a pretty poor shooting percentage but none of the other numbers look good. Is that cus the Kings suck? Who knows, but expectations are very tempered. |

Brown was the old timer to get from the Kings. This is an unfortunate trade and quite honestly all we needed to do was add a bit to beat out what the Bruins sent out for Hall depending on how much Bjork was being valued. Don’t like this at all and probably is close to worst case scenario of what we could have done at the deadline. Significant assets for a mediocre player that doesn’t move the needle. - Victoro311
A pair of mid round picks in 22 and 23 aren't really significant assets. He is still scoring at a .5 PPG clip. I would have preferred Hall but Carter is a really nice depth add. Worst case scenario? Not even close. |

I think I overreacted a bit when I woke up and saw this half asleep. His numbers don’t say bum. He’s basically putting 3rd line numbers on a terrible shooting percentage with a normal PDO and is breaking even in possession, expected goals for, and high danger chances for. He’s also being incredibly sheltered. Given that my vision for this line of his that’ll include either Zucker or McCann is for them to have favorable offensive deployment, that could work. But at the end of the day, while the numbers look fine, they also don’t move the needle and I don’t like the draft capital we gave up to get someone who’s not that good. |

It really does have that Marly Morrow feel, doesn't it? hahah fvck
I still don't mind it that much...Hex knows the guy from the Kings cups and might think he will gel real well. I just dont want Sully thinking this guy deserves more ice time than his play is deserving of, which I could see happening...if he doesnt play that well |

I thought we gave up this year’s 2nd and 3rd which would have been our highest picks in the draft which would have been significant. I’m now seeing that it’s a 3rd this year and a 4th next year? Yeah I’d still rather not but it’s a lot less bad than what my groggy ass thought i saw this morning. |

Its a 3rd next year and a 4th the year after that if what I am seeing is correct...
I also can't find poop on what the conditional parts are, but I'm lazy. |

It's actually next years 3rd (2022) and a 4th two years (2023) from now so even better.
I would guess the conditions are that Carter retires... if Carter doesn't retire then the Pens don't owe the picks. |

Also the multiple draft picks, while conditional, contradict the previous message about not wanting to spend futures. I’m not against spending futures. Just that Jeff Carter is not the route I would have gone with them.
not sure what that guy thinks you can get for conditionnal 3rd and 4th round picks.
prices are a bit low so far this year, but still |

Yeah my whole thing was get a top 6 winger that moved the needle or do nothing so I still don’t love that we did this but this is more of a whatever trade than a bad trade given that. |

The bad part is as of now is you are committing 2.6m in cap space to Carter for next season. |

Did Carter have to waive any clauses to be traded? |

Carter is at least a middle 6 winger though.
When healthy (lol) the winger are solid now
LW - Guentzel - McCann - Zucker
RW - Rust - Kap - Carter |

No one credible has said it but it makes a lot of sense that he’d retire after this season. I would like to think that a guy like Hextall who said a million times he’d strike a balance between helping the team now and keeping an eye to the future didn’t go out and get a guy that would cost 2.6 against the cap and May only be a 4th liner next season. Or maybe he feels that Carter at 2.6 is super movable if he doesn’t retire? Who knows but yeah if he’s still on the roster next season this trade looks worse than it does right now. |

I think he retires. Pens would actually pick up cap space next season in that scenario. Hextall just left LA... I'm sure he and Carter are in tune here. |

Is he? He’s pretty much breaking even on everything with highly offensive deployment with 1.6 pts/60. That says third liner, not middle six guy to me. But yeah I get what you mean that if we were ok with Bobby Ryan for a 4th we should be ok with this. I’m just not sure I was ok with Bobby Ryan as our only move. I would like this trade more if we figured out a way to swing our second (which we apparently still have) for a bigger gun. Then Carter as offensive depth would make more sense. |

Was half retained on Carter? At $2.6M I'd love to have Carter again next year.
I saw somewhere that if Carter retires the Pens would actually pick up a cap space credit. If half retained the Pens would pick up $350k and at full cost $700k (ballpark figures).
Based on this it would be outstanding if the Pens took his full cap and he retired. Would be a sneaky brilliant play. |

Given that McCann has played well with Malkin and Zucker hasnt I definitely agree. Which is kind of a shame because Carter is probably a better winger than center for our purposes. |
