Is he? He’s pretty much breaking even on everything with highly offensive deployment with 1.6 pts/60. That says third liner, not middle six guy to me. But yeah I get what you mean that if we were ok with Bobby Ryan for a 4th we should be ok with this. I’m just not sure I was ok with Bobby Ryan as our only move. I would like this trade more if we figured out a way to swing our second (which we apparently still have) for a bigger gun. Then Carter as offensive depth would make more sense. - Victoro311
Well his 1.6 p60 is better than Crosby, Zucker, and Rust.
1.6 probably puts him in the 25-30 point range. Sprinkle in some pp2 production and he’s a 35 point player which is okay. |

The bad part is as of now is you are committing 2.6m in cap space to Carter for next season. - Feds91Stammer
That would be the main thing I'd worry about. The Pens have a tight cap situation as it is heading into next year with raises due to Marino, Blueger, and maybe ZAR. I haven't followed Jeff Carter enough to know if this retirement talk is based on anything other than wishful thinking.
As far as fit, I guess I like it? I felt they needed a depth scorer at RW and they got one. Doesn't move them up the list of Cup favorites, but it does fill out the line-up better.
I am worried after Marleau last year about mixing in an older player, but the scoring and possession stats say he's still a decent player and better than what Marleau was before coming here. |

Given that McCann has played well with Malkin and Zucker hasnt I definitely agree. Which is kind of a shame because Carter is probably a better winger than center for our purposes. - Victoro311
Can flip that and play ERod at C. |

Yup. Apple and oranges. Marleau had no business even skating in the NHL last season. Richards can obviously still play. If 36 is too old for those younger players, then I guess so is 33 and 34 and maybe that's why they are all playing on the bottom "punk" lines. I wonder if they still sit at the little table at Thanksgiving too?

And honestly it was always probable this was all we could afford to do. It was either something like this or get super lucky and buy super low on someone undervalued. Tatar kind of came off the table, Arvidson was probably never on the table, and Hall went to Boston. Is what it is. |

Per LeBrun: condition on the 3rd is that if we reach the SCF and Carter plays in 50% of the games, it becomes a 2nd. |

Oof I was hoping the condition went the other direction. Oh well, here's to hoping we lose a 2nd! |

Sure, I agree. I don't love or hate it. I do think they needed to get somebody at his level though. |

I mean that condition is pretty difficult to reach lol
1. The pens aren’t making the finals.
2. If they do, that trade is worth it every day if the week lol |

I’m in the same boat. I also think what other routes this could have gone. They were so dead set on a long pants player and could have spent assets in much worse fashion.

The one comfort here is the Pens held on to a nice amount of capable depth both up front and in the back. |

Since it's a 2022 pick, does that mean we could win the cup this year, Carter retires and it stays as a 3rd? |

Do they not have a shot as much as others contenders out there? Other than maybe Tampa, contenders are pretty much at the same level. Or close to. |

Don't know, and if the Pens win the cup, don't care what happens with the pick. |
