Your narrative is incorrect. It’s more relevant with forwards. I don’t buy that a d mans peak is 25. Perhaps if you are purely looking at offence
- CanuckDon

Who said 25? It isn’t my narrative, and the supposition is that players begin to decline in their 30’s

Forwards for sure. Hence the Pearson signing being moronic. Defencemen decline a lot slower IMO

I'm not suggesting either will see a steep decline, but they have had struggled already and can imagine they would either hold current play or decline. Especially because unlike those two you suggested, Vancouver has Hughes (and potentially Rathbone) to get the better linemates and powerplay time. Cap efficiency is more the issue than their actual play, I think you could keep one, but both are tough when you need to improve
- WhiteLie

A lot goes into it. Linemates, overall team quality. TOI, injuries, systems.

Gio was asked once why he was still able to play so well past 30 and he said lack of playoffs and never picked for World Championships.

Guessing he was joking a bit but might be true.

I’ve been spending some time in the Flames threads and boy do they want Gio gone. And when I said gone I mean shot from a cannon gone. He’s way past his prime.

Re: above decline for defensemen.

You're finding the outliers, just as you could with forwards (Ovi et al). Most defensemen start to decline by 32. Not saying all do, but on average that's about when.

- NewYorkNuck

Yep. Karlsson, Doughty, Subban, etc. all regressed during or before their early 30s.

Weber also if you're extending it to injuries.

Two years removed from his norris trophy. He is 37 now and been carrying that D for forever. 1 more year and he will be done there.

Subban has been the most glaring... and that contract.

P.K. Subban signed a 8 year / $72,000,000 contract with the Montreal Canadiens, including a $25,500,000 signing bonus, $72,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $9,000,000. In 2020-1, Subban will earn a base salary of $2,000,000 and a signing bonus of $6,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $9,000,000.

It’s very difficult to quantify success, or effectiveness. As for scoring rates, just over 28 is the peak, meaning below and above that age they are on the incline/decline. Will always be outliers, and the mean age is on the decline as more and more young players are successfully transitioning to the NHL. This is just one example, but it’s easy to follow.

You are welcome to your opinion, I just don’t think we’re going to see “more” or “better” from Myers, maybe from Schmidt, maybe.

Doughty on pace for 60 points this year has really regressed. If 82 games played.

Probably the biggest surprise was there being more, on average, in the 32-35 range than within the 20-23 ranks, although for what it’s worth more recent trends differ.

Myers is such a tricky one. He physically has all the tools to be successful and have longevity, but someone needs to work with him on using his body effectively and make the right reads. If I'm betting between the two, I think Schmidt is the better guy to play out the contract only because I think he's had to be smarter at his size vs Myers

The guys who buck the trend in the older category are a real marvel. Petry doing what he is is unbelievable. But most of the time we’re talking about guys who get Norris consideration, so it’s really the best of the best.

If Myers could be a 15min per night 3rd pair, PP2 guy he would probably be very successful (and seen as such, especially if he were at sub $4m)

As you know I’m not knowledgeable in regards to prospects or the draft but even I knew that Kopitar was going to be something special. The one and only time I yelled at the TV during a draft was when the Canucks passed on him for a dman.

Man I was pissed off.

This team will not compete until there is a complete gutting of it's management and coaching staffs.

here’s the movie quote:

I think you are gonna find, when this poop is over ... I think you're gonna find yourself one smiling mother****er.

The thing is, Butch, right now, you've got ability. But painful as it may be, ability don't last. And your days are just about over. Now, that's a hard mother****ing fact of life. But it's a fact of life your ass is gonna have to get realistic about.

See, this business is filled to the brim with unrealistic mother****ers. Mother****ers who thought their ass would age like wine. If you mean it turns to vinegar, it does. If you mean it gets better with age, it don't. Besides, Butch, how many fights you think you got left in you anyway? Two? Boxers don't have an "old timer's league". You came close, but you never made it, and if you were gonna make it, you would have made it before now.

Truer words have never been spoken.
