Rutherford admits to leaving because of a disagreement, but won't say with whom or what it is. Also says that no one tried to offer anything for Sid... - Beatnic57
Thanks for sharing. I found the Kessel trade talk interesting. Obviously there was a divide because Fitzgerald got fired over the big argument. And why would anyone offer anything for Sid. They know it's not gonna happen lol. |

I think sample sizes are important to recognize when you are looking at things on a micro/macro level of trends (shots, shot attempts, high danger, saves, goals, etc.) but I think when you are looking at the last 3 years of playoffs from the Penguins, it's safe to say they just weren't good enough. If they were, they would have created a larger sample size by winning.. but they didn't lol so here we are. - j.boyd919
I think lumping together different year's playoffs is nuts to be honest, let alone doing so and ignoring context as to why they weren't good enough and just saying JR did a bad job is a lazy narrative IMO. In these seasons there were long stretches that statistically the Pens were the best or near best in almost every metric...when healthy, or mostly healthy, that is. |

Was wondering something at work today that’s way off the wall but do you think GMJR quit because they told him they wanted to bring in Burke and he got pissed and left? |
|
|
|
Yeah the Leafs and Oilers weren't playoff teams either in that very normal scenario....
Also there's some good context for that Habs team too....like the guys they got back that werent there when the Covid lock down started....but hey, vacuum eyes, you do you. - MattStrat
Comparing pittsburgh to Edmonton is really more of an insult than a valid argument to support your idea. |

Lol why did you respond to my joke comment with this serious question? lol
But no, i don't. I think it was just disagreement with front office.

Just may random thought on seeing JR. He looks as relaxed as I've ever seen him. Frankly, he looks like a man who needs to stay retired. |

I agree with you, it's Sullys team and he and JR didn't get along. I dont think he is going to have the same issues with Hextall. JR had a massive ego, to him those cups were all his doing... he didn't partner with Sully on personnel whatsoever. - MacPatty
They all have ego's or they wouldn't be where they're at. What you have to look at, and you may be alluding to this, is how controlling you are.
I'll be honest, I have no idea how stubborn Hextall is. I can tell both Burke and Sullivan are bull headed. If the Ryan Reaves fiasco would play out now, Sullivan would be gone. All Burke would do is say, if you don't play him you better not lose.

ok..but only one of those were playoffs. - MattStrat
This is not meant as snarky. I am curious. So if you do not consider the Habs series last year as "playoffs," do you consider the Pens having the current longest running playoff appearances alive? Or in your opinion did it die last year? |

The distinction is the the playins were post season but not playoffs. Our playoff streak is dead but our post season streak continues. |

You didn't ask me but the stats were credited to post season play. Therefore it was a post season appearance.
I disagree, it should have been treated the same way baseball does their tie-breaker. Statistics go to the Regular Season.

Yeah, they peaked at the wrong time lol
I mean I'm not saying that JR just did a bad job. Coaching comes into play. Roster management. Goaltending. Player's execution. Etc.
Sully has been the coach for all of those years, so lumping them imo is fair.
I've given my opinion at the end of each of those playoffs, numerous times lol poop that's all we argue about over the summer so it's not like we didn't hyper analyze each one of those playoffs haha. Given that it's in the rear view mirror, it's simpler to say they're 1-10.

Sullivan referred to GMJR as his best friend after GMJR quit. Pretty sure those two got along just fine. Not to mention, on In the Room, they literally sat right next to each other discussing personnel for the upcoming season. They worked hand in hand constructing the team. |

My guess is that after the Ryan Reaves debacle, they worked together more to get on the same page with the way the team was constructed. |

Playoff Team Records
Most Consecutive Playoff Appearances
Note: 2019-20 includes results from the Stanley Cup Qualifiers.
This is how the NHL.com records has it listed. I can see where there is confusion... especially since the Pens aren't listed
EDIT: I think that it's because the NHL still considers the Pens playoff streak still active, that's why they are not showing on the list... |

I thought Tortorella was his best friend. Anywho, yes they worked well together, especially when Sully got the last word in. I would use Gudbranson, Galchenyuk, and Kahun as examples after Reaves. Martin was the guy who coveted Johnson.
Sullivan is going to have a lot of say in personnel decisions, as he should. I don't see him having the final word anymore.
