Well based on history, I can see Stan overpaying to get Saad back
- LAHawk
I hope not. I was just looking at the cap friendly list of next year's UFA's to see who would be candidates. Looking for a 30ish defensive oriented, good character forward or two who still has something left in the tank that would sign a one year deal for up to 2M.
Cizikas or Glendening?
Looking further ahead, the prize in the UFA market after next year is Alexsander Barkov. He'll be 27 at the start of the '23 season. He would be a nice add. Only problem is that's the last year of the Kane, Toews, Keith contracts and the $$$ have to fit in somehow. |

If Toews isn't playing the cap space thing eases considerably. Barkov at 27 would be a serious addition to any team. |

Maybe Stan knew more about Toews' situation than us when he took on the Connelly contract for beyond this year. But if Toews is good to go next year, then Connelly can be Zack Smith'ed with a bad back.
I was hoping that Connelly would be revitalized by his trade to a new team. But for 2 periods last night I thought he was not dressed because I never noticed him until the 3rd. |

When you play with the 2 blackholes Kampf and Carpenter, not easy to be noticed. I thought Kampf might be the new Kruger, he has gotten progressively worse. How can he be such a great defensive forward, and our penalty killing of which he is the firs unit, be so bad. Forget about he brings zilch to the offensive end, he doesn't even forecheck well anymore.

The contracts of Seabs, and perhaps Shaw, can absorb that. |

Do I daresay that signing Barkov as a free agent would be the 2022 equivalent of signing Hossa as a FA? |

Assuming no injury issues in the meantime, he's an exception to my no UFA stance. Partly because he would be 27, and partly because he could be the closest thing in the league to Marion Hossa. |

I wonder who thinks learning JC's system is a big problem with some (maybe most) of the player's. The issue is more not wanting to play this system - jhawk59
I am of another opinion: this system is why they are having success; they interchange to various other established schemes as the situation/score/time dictates.
The team will not make playoffs if they don't fix these problems. - jhawk59
Wow, we have gone from they never stood a chance going to the playoffs to playing JC system with a rookie goalie, and having success with JC's system(s) and basically that is the main problem needed to fix or they won't make the playoff?
The opening NHL netminder audition was a helicopter from the first two starters to the rookie rotations of the current line-ups.
One newbie forward is excelling. Another is showing he can play in the NHL with success in some areas and both have high end hockey IQ and rest of the regular "young vets" and te rest ofthe rookies .
So we got Hagel and Sutter and the rest are works in progress.
I don't see problems except the tutelage of the newbies has got to make them improve.

But. Is it worth signing a star player to a huge multi year contract when there isn’t a strong supporting cast and depth in place? Even with Barkov the hawks aren’t close to being a contender. The defense is pretty raw and Kieth at 37 still the top defenseman isbt really promising. The forward group has some talent but lack depth. |

I think they have figure they are lacking truly NHL real dynamic forward who can dominate, be instantly seen as a player that is is necessary to watch out for, and stay with.
So, yeah, if you can get a guy who is not working out or team where they figure it is better to get some young defenders who already have NHL "hawk experience for that impact forward" I agree.
I like Nikki Borgstrom a lot, and not sure if any more reclamation projects are what they are after.
Soem team is going to regret the non brides deal they agreed to with one of their youngsters and the hawks will have room, the other team with more than willing to let a team grab him up or tarde for him...but the opportunities are few and far between, so if it happens you have to jump, and StanBo will have to handle the wrath of this board if this golden boy doesn't produce and the he hears the Danault chants or the Strome boos, as if the former is a star and the latter is not. (One has 21 points the other 13.0

I generally agree with your position. But a couple things. First is that this would be after next season. If the development of the Utes stalls, maybe you don't do it. Second is that the Hawks will likely be a donut team - lots of good support players in need of a really good player. The 1st season of his next deal will be Barkov's age 27 season. He can be a great player for six years and be a foundation piece.

Do you think the hawks yute movement will be better in two or three years? Because in two years Barkov is available. In three a younger Austen Matthews is a UFA. |

That is a longer answer than I can respond here. But my belief is everyone has a right to own a gun until they prove they cannot own it. Yes simple answer.
