This league, IMO, is better than the AHL, although obviously not quite as close to the North American style of play. And Seider is dominating it. At 19.

i think the skill and goaltending are better. With the bigger ice, the in the corner plays aren’t quite as fast and furious. The AHL likes to keep those players that will run you just for fun. Thankfully I’m not worried about Seider. Definitely looks like he can handle himself. He may not be in the AHL for long, and that’s a good thing for the team

One interesting thing to note is that the SHL league equivalency is higher than the AHL -- or in other words, SHL players don't tend to see their scoring rates decline when jumping to the NHL as much as AHL players do.

But yes, the rink dimensions (and consequently the optimal skillsets and styles of play) are different enough that it's not quite so black and white. Some guys are just made for one style or the other. I agree with you I think Seider's game will translate well.

I'm hoping he makes the NHL straight out of camp, provided he plays well and looks healthy. He already played 49 games in Grand Rapids last year, at age 18, and looked really good. And this of course this year he's taken another huge leap forward.

I get that it will probably take some time to re-acclimate to the North American game but I also think there's a good chance he will be able to do that acclimating in the NHL and still easily be good enough to play in Detroit's top 6.

I think you’re right. His skill set should translate well. Shooters who rely on that extra second are the ones that seem to suffer the most on the smaller ice. I think Seider could slot right in. The question will be minutes. If they want him playing 27 per night in the AHL as opposed to 18-20 in the NHL

When Seider was picked, i didn't know much about him and i was surprised by that pick given he was not someone mentioned as a top 10 pick at all. After his season in the AHL and now the SHL, it looks to be a damn good pick. Cozens or Zegras would have been good picks too and filled a need but i'm very happy with Seider.

Hopefully Seider can become our Hedman and anchor the blueline for a long time. I hope Yzerman can draft another stud on defense in this next draft although the Wings winning isn't helping that and i won't hold my breath for a lottery win to say the least.

If we can get one of Power, Hughes or Edvinsson (in that order for me) in this draft, it would go a long way into fixing the Wings backend. I think we will need to wait until the 2022 draft to fix the center position of finding someone that can bump Larkin down to 2nd line. I just hope Yzerman starts to consider positional need with the top pick and doesn't go with another winger.

If this had been a normal season I think he probably would have started in GR and maybe gotten called up pretty quickly. But since it was definitely not a normal season and there wasn't really even a guarantee that the AHL would play at all, they committed to putting him Sweden the whole season.

Which was, I think, 100% the right call under the circumstances. But my goodness, this kid really does look ready now. And he's been lights out all season. Already from his first couple of games he looked awesome and it just never let up.

I remember his first camp. He was 18, and was running the power play. He just naturally started giving input and guys wanted to listen. That’s nuts. It’s a strange aside, but he interviewed with every single NHL team, voluntarily. He said he wanted to experience as a prospect to go through that. This is an intense kid. Those interviews can be brutal. But, it shot his value way up once GMs got to listen to him. This kid must have some outstanding parents. His attention to detail and maturity are through the roof

Good call on that. There was a blip on the radar regarding AJ a couple weeks ago. I also had a chance to do some Lucas Raymond digging. His numbers weren’t off the charts, but his skating reminds me a little bit of Marner. When I watch the Leafs, Marner just makes play after play, keeping the puck in the O zone (as well as PK) and makes life a lot easier for Matthews. If Raymond can simulate some of that intensity it will be a huge boon for Detroit

Yeah i remember seeing that the Wings had 3 of the top 5 point producers under age 20 in the SHL with Seider being #1, Johansson being #3 and Raymond being tied with Holtz for #4 (Raymond having played 6 less games than Holtz).

Yup. Plus Berggren at age 20 having a big breakout season.

Quick update, Raymond signed his ELC. Yzerman really likes what he’s seeing in last year’s 4th overall selection (highest since Keith Primeau in 1990 coming in at 3rd)
