Well, I do think the GM job must be a steep learning curve. Fletcher has basically had 2 seasons with the Flyers. One good, one bad. He is 1 for 2. If he follows this up with 2 straight good seasons, he will be back on track.
- NC Flyers Fan
So you discount his Minnesota tenure? Did he not learn anything there? It's not like the Flyers is his first GM job, or hockey job for that matter. |

I want to sign Hamilton and get another Dmen via trade, so I would like to come into next season with Provy, Hamilton and another veteran Dmen like Ekholm, and augment with York, Morin and one other younger defenseman. - jd250
Way too many ifs your scenario. Also York and Morin are extremely green, that’s a tough bottom pair to count on. |

The QO needs to be $3,250,000, so I am pretty sure the cap hit will be higher than that regardless of deal length. - MBFlyerfan

in my opinion that isn't really a good excuse though. this season has been extremely disappointing and frustrating on a lot of levels. i definitely expected them to be worse defensively, but not quite as bad as they have been. - Ftown19125
AV has been blaming the schedule so I think any excuse is on the table when it comes to defending the sh!tty and shoddy play of this team |

The results of the games are meaningless at this point. Elliott playing well means nothing as he won't be here next year. Dissecting how the team plays as a unit is really is inconsequential. There will be a ton of changes over the summer.
The Flyers started a 56 game schedule 7-2-1, they were so bad in the month of March they made the final 20 games irrelevant.
That is pretty hard to do.
Outside of Couturier, Laughton, Provorov, and Hart there isn't anyone else on the roster who is guaranteed to be here next year. So outside of watching them, and maybe Farabee, and Allison that is all that is left this year. - PLindbergh31
I would suggest you just leaving us along until then. How does that sound?

If he keeps Couts, which, lets face it, is a near certainty, given the way this franchise rock-and-rolls, you will have Couts-Hayes-Laughton as your 1-2-3 down the middle for the next 5 years.
Imo, we are then going to be a well-below average offensive club. If they go that way, they have to make defense their strength*. They need a player better than Provorov on the first pairing. They need a strong, rugged defense. I am not sure a player like Sanheim or Ghost fits that mold. And they need stronger 2 way players among the forwards: people like TK will also need to go.
*Like Predators of a couple years ago, CBJ, even Minnesota a few years back, and Blues of course. - PT21 ++
I would agree except for the fact I don't see them keeping Laughton as the 3C, they know that will not yield a cup. Laughton can play up and down the lineup, for a short while at 3C, longer as a winger on the 3rd line but not a permanent 3C.

Sanheim is our second best defenseman, I pray he is on the roster next year or we are in trouble. No problem with adding but he needs to be here as well. - ClaudeFather
Saying Provorov and Sanheim are 1 and 2 on this team is vastly different than saying they are 1 and 2 dmen in this league.
I would definitely move Sanheim if I could really add that vet presence on the top pair even if he is 2-3 years older than Sanheim now.
Enough with all these kids on the back end...it is not working, obviously. A couple of Sanheim, Myers and Zamula need moved out to add a couple of solid vets back there.
Hagg is probably getting claimed in the ED so there's that as well.

If there's a team out there that is willing to do something dumb like let a Theodore get away, or trade a Seth Jones for a Ryan Johansen, or give up on a guy like Brent Burns mid-development cycle... then by all means, go for it.
But otherwise, almost all top-pair dmen these days are drafted by their own clubs.
Trade cost for established top-pair D tends to be debilitating. Signing/re-signing top-pair dmen in their prime eats up an extraordinary amount of cap space. And if you trade for a 30-yo vet, there's a good chance they steeply decline like Shea Weber, or end up on perma LTIR like Pronger.
We finally have a lot of quality young dmen. Pulling the plug on any of them now would likely end up with the team no better off, and possibly worse in the long-run. |

Yeah, and if that happens it pushes other players down the lineup. - Ftown19125
Given the way this year has unfolded, it's very had to argue to NOT push players that are retained down in the lineup. FFS, some should be pushed OUT of the lineup rather than just pushing them down. |

The hope for me is that JVR gets taken in the expansion draft. That opens up a spot in the top 9 for a young guy. Then Raffl being traded opens up a spot on the 4th line. And if someone beats out NAK for a spot on the 4th line, then so be it.
I know people want to get rid of Voracek for nothing, but they don't have anyone to put up his point totals right now. They'd need to be getting a good player back somehow. |

Same as it's been for the last 2 months - what all of us keyboard GM's (I count myself in that worthless category) think is wrong with the Flyers and what needs to be done to fix it. |

In my mind the management level is mostly to blame for the product we are seeing on the ice. I mean waiving Gostisbehere and without him there is nobody that can outplay him on the pp. Provorov maybe but he makes a lot of bad decisions and mishandles the puck too much. When we need a goal Gost is always out there because he is the best option. Hayes has made me want to vomit regularly, he started well but has been trash for a couple months now. AV is not the answer as his head games with Konecny in particular clearly divides the group. AV watches this crap daily and seems to do nothing about it ?? - joegreif17
what?? Ghost is still on the team. He was waived because Fletcher was very confident that he was not going to be claimed off of waivers. |

While I think it is true that most teams have 1 top pair defenseman drafted by their organization, it seems to be uncommon for both top pair defenseman to both be drafted by the team they play for. Just in the first group of top teams, I was surprised to find many have only that 1 guy in their defense lineup that was drafted by the team. Look at Tampa, Washington...who are the examples you are thinking of and are they a top team currently?

Orlov and Carlson were both drafted by the Caps.
There's several other contending teams with a homegrown current top-pair:
Reilly/Holl
Pelech/Pulock
Josi/Ellis
McAvoy/Lauzon
Poolman/Morrissey
Pesce/Slavin
But what I actually meant was top-pair caliber defensemen, which either tend to be completely home-grown, or acquired during the very early stages of their careers (Sam Girard, Doug Hamilton, Seth Jones, Noah Hanifin, Adam Fox, Sergechev, etc)
A lot of guys currently riding shot gun to #1 dmen aren't truly top-pair caliber -- their teams are just spreading the wealth. |
