But remember though, this would be a 1 year deal, while we wait for the Jones situation to resolve itself. Rotate Myers, Braun and Schenn opposite Provy.
I looked up some RHD who are UFAs. Erik Gudbrandson would be a possibility too.
More to the point though, I am different from most of you guys here in that I don't give a crap about respectability and competitiveness. If we don't get Jones, as far as I am concerned, we are seeing off the trifecta of Giroux, Voracek and JVR or getting as close as possible to that end point.
Until then, until we see who we have among the young guys, I am for either going big or going band-aid.

At least you’re being honest, because putting a bandaid (either standard size or a 3 inch patch, doesn’t matter) over major arterial bleeding is really ineffective. Rotating second-year and third pairing or 7th d-man for 20+ minutes a night...we would suck.

Ah, thats where you are so wrong. It would be amazingly effective for the aimed for euthanasia of the present roster.
To build a club contender, you need long term vision and the fortitude to suck. Look at the rosters of Ottawa (oldest guy is Dadonov is 31, signed for 2 more years). Wings (Nielsen and Filipulla are 36 and 37, 1 more year each), NJ Devils (Ben Street 33, is UFA, and PK Subban, 31 has 1 more year on that magnificent tank contract). Carolina has tuned the corner of course but they had a decade of futility (oldest player now is Jordan Staal 32, signed for just 2 more years),
None of these clubs are/were desperate to stanch the bleeding. None of them gave out high priced long term contracts to star players for "mentorship", even though t's startling how young most of their players are/were. Detroit gets rid of one of their best players in Mantha in the same way their arch rival (when they were out west) got rid of Stastny and Duchene. Devils lose Palmieri and Zacha, two vets, with nary a though about "mentorship".
Many among the bottom feeders will be unsuccessful, but one or two of them will own the Flyers a few years down the line.
But don't feel bad. We will still be in a tizzy, aiming for respectability and competitiveness any time things go south for a month or two. Like a hooker who cannot afford to have that time of the month, the emphasis will be on stanching the bleeding.

We should offer the Devils JVR and Ghost for Subban. His cap hit blows now but no way is he getting that much on his next deal.
Gives us a solid vet presence on D and we can still make another move for a D man since we didn’t give up picks or prospects. Devils make out decent on the deal on their end as well.

Though I drool at the thought of seeing Lindsay Vonn around town, I would think Debs say no. PK is only there for 1 more year, they are committed to rebuilding, and JVR and Ghost are longer term and they are neither here nor there. (They would just spoil draft position without being any part of the future).

I don't see a plan here, I see the beginning of a complete rebuild and I don't think that is necessary. Instead Fletcher has to get creative and just replace some veteran forwards while augmenting his backend. My plan is to replace Jake, JVR, Ghost, Myers and Elliott with Hamilton, Foligno, Schwartz, another top 4 veteran D and a FA goalie. Also next season add York, Frost, Allison and Foerster to the mix. This is enough turnover of the roster to address the culture and leadership on this team. Then augment further at the trade deadline to contend next season!

Don't think you necessarily need that stud #1 dman. It helps yeah, but I'd be perfectly comfortable with a top-4 comprised of a bunch of #2-3's who can all soak up a lot of minutes.
And you could always swing a trade for a younger guy to supplement your drafting efforts. Drouin for Sergechev, Turris for Girard, that kinda thing. - Tomahawk
and will drafting higher by tanking get you a #1 any faster or is it even a guarantee?

The number of lottery pick dmen who seriously undershot expectations is alarming: Jack Johnson, Gudbranson, Luke Schenn, Ryan Murray, Larsson, Reinhart, Juolevi, Haydn Fleury, Bogosian, Hickey, Cam Barker...
Even guys like Erik Johnson, JBo and Pitkanen who had respectable careers were a bit less than expected.
More misses than hits over the past 20 years, for sure.
