Money doesn't add up unless Ottawa signs him first.

Orlov and Carlson were both drafted by the Caps.

There's several other contending teams with a homegrown current top-pair:

Reilly/Holl
Pelech/Pulock
Josi/Ellis
McAvoy/Lauzon
Poolman/Morrissey
Pesce/Slavin

But what I actually meant was top-pair caliber defensemen, which either tend to be completely home-grown, or acquired during the very early stages of their careers (Sam Girard, Doug Hamilton, Seth Jones, Noah Hanifin, Adam Fox, Sergechev, etc)

A lot of guys currently riding shot gun to #1 dmen aren't truly top-pair caliber -- their teams are just spreading the wealth.

I agree with some of what you say (except for the fact that you left out Chara, who signed at the peak of his career, at 29, as an UFA and essentially changed the franchise).

But here is my question: By your own account, Provy is more like a #2. You would be thrilled if Myers ended up like Coburn (2nd pairing). You have said Sanheim Myers could be a great 2nd pairing (so you see Sanheim as 2nd pairing too). York projects as a 2/3 guy by most.

In the meantime, you would like to keep Couturier, Giroux and Provorov, ensuring you pick mid to late 1st round.

My question is this, where does the #1D man come from if you are neither willing to pick high nor trade? You just keep spinning the roulette wheel and hope someone, sometime pans out?

What’s the incentive for Ottawa here? Does Tkachuk want out? Otherwise doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

Don't think you necessarily need that stud #1 dman. It helps yeah, but I'd be perfectly comfortable with a top-4 comprised of a bunch of #2-3's who can all soak up a lot of minutes.

And you could always swing a trade for a younger guy to supplement your drafting efforts. Drouin for Sergechev, Turris for Girard, that kinda thing.

While I think it is true that most teams have 1 top pair defenseman drafted by their organization, it seems to be uncommon for both top pair defenseman to both be drafted by the team they play for. Just in the first group of top teams, I was surprised to find many have only that 1 guy in their defense lineup that was drafted by the team. Look at Tampa, Washington...who are the examples you are thinking of and are they a top team currently?

You mean John Carlson the pick homer traded for Steve eminger...?

For Seth Jones he’d be very available in my book.

Really doubt Homer would have picked Carlson anyway, after taking Sbisa.

It won't happen, because the Senators wouldn't do it.

As far as Giroux is concerned.

He's an Ottawa native
Less pressure
He may feel Sens will be contender before Flyers

Way too many ifs your scenario. Also York and Morin are extremely green, that’s a tough bottom pair to count on.
- ClaudeFather

York is green, if he even makes the team. However Morin is not green, he is older and experienced now an has proven, at least to me, he can play in the NHL.

Why would Giroux agree to this, is your question?

I think I’m the only one sees this trade proposal and think EA Sports NHL 21.

Our team Captain, a rising star with a 60 point season under his belt and a first round pick for guy who has proven nothing so far. Oh and let’s retain salary.

You know what would be fun...G to Penguins for Malkin...G and Sid on the same team. If we're gonna just make up trades, why not have fun with it!

Lets just say Brady would have to turn into Keith to make this trade remotely worth it.

So you have no studs on D.

And you have no current or projected studs up front (save your guy Frost, who will be 22 in a few days and has yet to crack the lineup, was picked #27 and is largely not seen as a top 20 prospect).

You may however have a stud goalie.

Do you know ANY club that has won a cup with this profile?

It doesn’t seem like “most” though, far less than half. It is again an interesting point that the 2nd best defenseman often anchors the 2nd pair often because of fit plus spreading the wealth or shortage of top RHD.

The Flyers right now have drafted 5 of their starting 7 defenseman (6 from the system as Myers was a young undrafted signed prospect)...With several more quality defense prospects in the system.

I can understand that fans have favorites, but to address the fit problems, some homegrown guys may need to be traded. It would be unusual to have 6 homegrown guys fit together in a timely fashion. The stance on drafting has always been best player available. The Flyers slacked on getting RHD in the draft. Combine that with the length of time it takes to develop to top pairing staple...the hole is real.

How about the fact he is only 21, has scored 20 goals as 19 and 20 years old, is scoring at a rate close to 30 this season, is huge, and is doing all this on a poopty club?
