What do u think we sign Sorokin for though? $3 mill or $4 mill bridge deal?

how much u think Grubauer or Mrazek makes? u think our coaches with one of those and Sorokin making 3.5 mill ish each can't be just as good and that isn't better than 8/9 mill+ on Varly/Sorokin.

Let's see exactly what we all want happens and we win the cup or get to the cup final so u definitely don't want to trade Varly.. what do you thing we would get in a trade for Sorokin?

(I am not saying you are wrong. you are probably right and Varly will be our starter game 1 next year, but I'm just bored at work and wondering what we could get for either of these guys in a best case scenario).

- niteislander

I just don't see the point in trading Varlamov to save $5M and then ultimately signing someone for about $3.5M/$4M. I don't necessarily agree that we'd get a 1st rounder for him. So a couple of mid-round picks and maybe a B-level prospect isn't really enough for me to want to trade a good goaltender that we already know is good.

To me it sounds, at best, like a lateral move that carries a (minimally) higher level of risk. At worst, we sign a worse goaltender that doesn't make all that much less than Varly and don't really get much benefit out of it and/or Sorokin has a down year and we have a goaltending issue on a team that doesn't score much.

Glad they got the two points yesterday, but man, they gotta find their rhythm again. I was on the road this weekend so I listened to the game on XM and had the Flyers' radio broadcast, and all they could talk about is how surprised they were at how off kilter the Isles looked compared to the last time the two teams played, and from what I was able to hear, anyway, it was hard to argue with that.

Lee's a part of it, but the team found a way to bear down and get goals without him. It's really since the deadline that they've just looked sort of lost. I can't help wondering if they overthought things when the new guys came in...benching people, changing lines, etc. It can't be a coincidence that all these guys have gone cold at the same time. I don't know, maybe just plugging the two new guys into the obvious holes -- first-line LW and third-line LW -- and leaving everything else wouldn't have been such a shock to the system.

Whatever it is, I just hope they figure it out in time to hold down a playoff spot and keep home ice.

Just what i was thinking since the new guys came in seems like they just shut down.Seems like something went wrong .

Just one idiot's opinion, but I think they should put things back as close to as they were before the trade as they can (injuries and so forth obviously call for some adjustment) and let players get their rhythm and confidence back. Those short passes they always make to get out of their zone are going to no one now since players are zigging when their linemates think they're zagging.

And I'm still for putting Palmieri with Barzal and leaving them together until they figure out each other's tendencies, even though I'm pretty sure that's crazy talk now when it seemed like a no brainer six seconds after the trade was announced. I get that Lee brought a defensive element and they want to preserve that, but I was under the impression that the whole reason everyone wanted Palmieri instead of Hall was precisely because Palmieri is a more complete player in all three zones. In any case, it looks for all the world like Palmieri's a trigger man in desperate need of a set-up guy, and Barzal's a set-up guy dishing passes to a rotating cast of depth forwards.

Like I said, just an opinion. Smarter people than me don't seem to agree!

I was one of them...

He had a good season with Colorado and played well for them in the playoffs one year then crapped the bed. I for one was not happy we signed him and not Lehner. He has played excellent since then so happily wrong about him.

- Cptmjl

Eh, Lehner's put up similar numbers to Varlamov since leaving, went just as far in the playoffs last year, and may not have created the cap situation they'll have to deal with this offseason, so I don't think past-you was 100% wrong there.

The big question is how important was/is Varlamov to getting Sorokin here and making him feel at ease. If it really was that critical of a component, then yeah, you (and I) were wrong about that.

Bellows had 3 goals in 2 games when Lee went down. If he continued to score like that we didnt need to make a trade at all.

Agreed but I was “wrong” about varlamov not being a good goaltender more then comparing him with Lehner. He bounced back after crapping the bed in Colorado and I didn’t see that happening. He has played well for us irregardless of how well Lehner is playing now. I’ll also add like a lot of other fans I was a big Lehner fan. The guy superseded a rough patch in his life and came out spades. Have to respect that the guy is awesome.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, Varlamov's been damn solid for the Isles.

And I agree about Lehner...he was easy to root for and it was awesome that he was all-in on being an Islander for that season. I mean, you don't go and get Long Island tattooed on your neck because you're just going through the motions

To me it’s still a puzzling move that could have went south for Lameriello. Good on him and I’m sure our goaltending coaches for wanting varlamov and having the balls to sign him while not resigning a fan favorite and sticking to their guns. I’m not saying I agree with it to this day in all honesty but that was something that could’ve went completely sideways for them and takes a big set to do it

Islanders are making it very difficult on the goalies with there lack of scoring. There is no margin for error at all. Lots of pressure to keep the game scoreless. Hope they start scoring goals soon.

Not just Lehner, but then Greiss too a season later. It takes guts to look at your pair of Jennings Trophy winners and say, "Nah, we can do better."

There isn’t a team out there that plays an entire season at the highest level they’re capable of. Doesn’t happen. Every, single, team goes in a funk for a period at some point of the season. All you can hope for is your goaltenders winning you some games when that happens and the team digs themselves out of the funk before it becomes a major problem. Where right at the precipice let’s see if they dig themselves out of it and are better for it before we all collectively lose our minds. These next six games against the caps and Rangers will tell us all we need to know.

Well yeah but Greiss was getting a bit long in the tooth. Also, with Sorokin finally ready to come over I don’t think there was anyone that was really a debate for at least from a fans standpoint. That is coming from probably one of the biggest Greiss fans on here. With that said you have a point none the less it does take some cahoons

Trotz says he needs to see more from #Isles top guys. But also from the younger guys, took Noah Dobson out because of his performance last couple games, says he hasn't been getting enough from Oliver Wahlstrom lately. Says it's a grind for the younger players.

I think we all were big Lehner fans.. still are in fact. My point was more about our goalie coaches then about everyone on here's opinion on Robin and Varly. Our Goalie coaches wanted Varly the summer before we signed him and the trade fell through so they signed Lehner and certainly helped him turn his career around.. just feel like if they grab someone it's b/c they see something we don't..etc.
