You are right, The Sabres need more prospects that wont play in the NHL next year.

Its not like this team is desperate to make the playoffs or anything.

- ImThatGuy

Construct a realistic offer for, let's say, the 1st OA pick. Keep in mind that any top 3 pick is probably similarly valued.

Can't go wrong with either. Both will be studs. If Beniers is there you take him though.
- DirtyDan

I think I would, but I'd be wondering post draft if I picked the 2nd best forward.

I wonder if Chicago thought that when the Pens picked Jordan Staal in 2006.

So you want to use our first to get a young high quality, proven roster player. In a flat cap, why do any teams want to part with a young proven talent for a young unproven talent? I think your target area is teams that have players that they can't pay.

IE Vegas
Karlsson
Marchessault
Tuch
Theodore

Take Fleury at 50% retained for his final year.

They will not give you Shea Theodore.

Those other 3 are no where near the value of the 1st OA, unless you make them take Jeff Skinner.

Even then. Why are we forcing the issue with overpaid March or Billy.

I think he's just saying to get over it because what's done is done. We can judge the pick when the kid is in his mid 20's. Or 'when it's a situation where' Rossi is Braydon Point and Jack Quinn is Rickard Rakell.

I'm a Quinn stan because of his rapid development and his character. Not saying KA made the correct choice, but I will continue to like him until he gives me a reason not to. AHL was probably a bit of a reach for him this season, which is what it is, and I'd bet my house that people round here would be way more excited about him in a normal season, playing in the OHL.

- TheSabresTaco

I understand, and want him to succeed. And he might, I think he's an NHL player for sure. I like his attitude, progression his last year in the O, and upside is nice. Just think Rossi is the better player. If the staff, and a lot of the experts think Power is the unquestioned number one player, we get him, there will be a lot of people upset here. My point then would be what's done is done, and at least it wouldn't be a reach like Quinn. We can always trade Bryson, Laaksonen, Joki if we need to for forward help in that scenario.

After a horrible season we're gifted a top 5 pick and you want to trade it for players that are old and very heavy on the contract

I would like to add a forward with are first pick this year, we need to add to are forward pipeline. Are D pipeline is pretty flush especially with Johnson Kukkonen Lyckasen still on the way.

I feel like you're going to have quite the spattering of Marchands this year.

"How did so and so go in the middle of the second/third/fourth round!?"

Our defensive depth is honestly quite impressive. That's a credit to Jason. Other than the obvious Dahlin pick, he snagged Joker, Laaks, Bryson, Samuelsson, while Murray got..... Borgen. Mix in McCabe and you have a great foundation. Much to everyone's chagrin, Risto is probably here for a while, all we can hope for is that he's not paid as much this time, or he refuses to re-sign. Otherwise, if he forces the issue, we can trade him this OS.

They hung up real quick when I said “what kind of coverage do you have for a pair of 42 yr old legs that are on the higher mileage side?”.

Don't disagree. Hope they all pan out, would be a nice backend. Forward would be my choice as well. If they end up choosing Power because they feel that he is far and away the best prospect in the draft, how can you blame them for that tho? That's my whole point. They have scouted, met, watched tape and workouts. Teams don't always get it right, but they do have a lot more info then us guys on a board here is all I'm saying.

In the right scenario, the player we could get for that pick could be an awesome trade. But you rarely in the modern NHL see those top picks traded for players. We've seen the Pens trade Staal forth 8th (whoops Pens) and the Canucks trade Cory for 9th (whoops again NJ) but those top few picks just don't go anywhere. The Sabres have all the reason in the world to say someone gimme a great young player, and those other teams say GFYS. What's more likely is the Sabres move down a few spots and the other team gives you a nice middling NHLer.

Risto's agent I guess didn't demand a trade, but made it clear they'd be open to one. I think Risto is a TDL move next year or this offseason. Can't see any way he resigns here even if we didn't have better players waiting to take his spot.

There's lots of options, but I think at this point it's pretty safe to say Power won't be far and away the best prospect in the draft. He may be top tier, top5, top3, who knows, but he isn't some guaranteed #1. If they chose him, from the looks of things, it's because they like him not because he's leaps and bounds better than his comp.

I prefer BPA for struggling teams as well. But there needs to be some consideration of what we have now. We're really in need of a top6 forward badly. If that's the case, if there's two or three guys of similar talent/potential, we should take the forward, right?

Based on the Quinn pick alone, just because a player is ranked somewhere doesn't mean he falls that way on the big board. Obvious is obvious players, your McDavids, Eichels, Matthews et al, yeah, you're never going to say no. But in a draft like this, where no player is truly special, and no player is leaps and bounds ahead of the next few guys, KA could easily pick the scouts' average number 5 guy. And everyone would lose their poop, Flacco would lead an army to the Peace Bridge and Broad's wife would have to enroll him into the psych ward, but it may be the best player for this organization because he fits here the best, coupled with having great talent, skill and character.

I forgot you are only allowed to have players under 24 in order to be good.

its not like there are players that are good and have good contracts.

Draft Owen Power and hope he is "Tyler Myers" as it was put.

We can't forget the expansion draft either, there will be teams that can't protect everyone and will want something for them than loosing them for free, those extra picks can come in handy in that aspect too.
