By making a staunch short term commitment, the amount of time that a shutdown lasts could theoretically be minimized. Just musing in hindsight though.

Bottom line is that this has never been *just* about health.

It has been about trying to keep the economy alive and keeping political careers alive, at ALL levels of government.

Why didn't Trudeau give everyone 2 months to get back into the country, and then shut down all international travel as of last May? He STILL hasn't stopped it, instead he just put punishment in place.

Punishment = support from voters, except the one who choose to travel.
Shutting down Travel = protest about rights and freedoms from voters.

It’s hard to say that if Ford had done all the right things that they would have been able to stop the spread of this variant. There is no doubt at all in my mind that he has done a terrible job in the last few months anyway in listening to his medical advisors and taking firm action.

And no that doesn’t make me feel any better.

He’s known what’s coming and he’s known what’s needed to be done and he has responded to too little, too late every time.

I also think we need to separate the discussion of vaccines from the discussion of standard public health measures of closures, etc. There is no way we could be anywhere near enough on vaccines to make a difference right now. Even the States which is over 50% vaccinated is facing higher infection rated and case numbers in some states (last time I checked) then we are. This isn’t politics. This is incompetence.

All true but the UK and Israel are further ahead in vaccinations and both have seen dramatic improvements.

Even here, with cases rising exponentially, the death rate is being heavily controlled by vaccinations.

My only point is both measures are important and nobody should be escaping blame. The UK had the advantage of vaccine manufacturing. Israel did not. So opportunities existed ...especially for a wealthy country like Canada.
