If you have the puck more, you have the possibility to turn the puck over more. Jack Eichel is elite because he has the puck often and has a low turnover rate.

Sam Reinhart is a top 30-40 forward in the league because he creates positive offensive impacts, scores at a top forward rate, and is not elite partially because his turnover rate is higher than say, Jack.

Ristolainen has a low turnover amount because he doesn't have the puck, because he's (frank)ing bad.

I can watch Cody Eakin step onto the ice and fumble the puck on almost every possession. No analytics required.

I can watch Risto cross check someone in their own crease on a power play, I can watch him try to face wash someone while they're trying to score in the goal crease, I can watch him fling pucks aimlessly up the boards, I can watch him bumble passes in his own zone, and I can watch him throw hits. I can watch him QB a power play at an elite rate. Without analytics, I can tell you that after watching him for 7 years, this is his game. Aggressive cave man, great point guy with the man advantage. This means, as long as he's sitting at the point, he's useful. Get him in his own end, and he's a tire fire.

But the analytical chips are constantly chopping for players who play against Ristolainen and the chips have been flying for 8 seasons.

So because Hall, Skinner and Eichel went cold shooting earlier this season that means that Ristolainen isn’t bad?

Actually, I stay out of the labeling of the players because I am not going to invest time in looking at analytics like others. I spend my day working analytics and know what their uses are.

I did not say he is terrible. I do not have anything against him. It is my guess that he is probably a 60/40 chance, when moved to a winning team, he gets many Norris Trophy votes.

Overall, the combination of players hurts the whole. The Sabres are the definition of the sum of the parts is a sh!t ton less than the whole.

however, the object of the game is to score more goals than the opposition...and the sabres haven't been doing that...with certain players on the ice the opposition has scored more than the sabres...

there is a reason why, when a team is down 1 or 2 goals late in the third, dahlin or risto is on the ice and other d men never see the ice
