I agree that he's not worth $10M per right now, but $80M for 8 years is likely what the team would have to offer to get him to consider missing out on 4 UFA seasons. - kingcong39
Let's break it down...
He's 21 now with 3 seasons in the books, will be a UFA after 7 seasons..so 4 more right?
What is his current contract value on a 4 year deal?
What will it be for a 4 year contract at the time he reaches UFA status in 4 years?
I haven't looked into contract comparables so I'm lost on it.
$10m for 8 years seems very high to me though...could be very wrong. |

I was just thinking we look about to fall out of last place with NJ and the Ducks pretty much in a free fall. I would like Bernier just was thinking we might not get the chance. - Buff36
I still seeing us staying at 1 I love the Effort they put in but we about to be in playoff hockey next week |

he brought in the karlsson contract as a percent of the sens cap when he signed it...which, for me, is a pretty good comparable |

the consensus here and almost everywhere is that the top four or five, maybe even down to seven, are almost interchangeable...no? - Michael Pachla
Maybe, if it is though..wouldn't you want your choice rather than taking leftovers..partial or not. |

I believe the reason it would take $10M is the way Dahlin and his agent look at it is Dahlin will be worth at least $10M per, if not more, in 4 years, so if he signs for less than that now, he's losing money each of the 4 UFA years of his 8 year deal. |

I don't think Dahlin or his agent even consider the deal you suggested above. Not nearly enough dollars to eat 4 years of UFA status. - kingcong39
I respect your opinion. Probably correct.
I guess it depends on how confident they (dahlin/agent) are in his abilities - is he still the highly touted superstar #1 overall pick?
Dahlin has been excellent since donnie took over, but isnt his overall stock down since the draft? -34 currently and -54 for his career.
This is more a question than a statement.
Is dahlin playing to his standard?
If dahlin is/ has been spectacular, current market value would be eichel $ 8 for 10 in my opinion.
Then the pandemic discount and his sketchy play at times over the past 3 years.
Yes, 3 coaches and I like him plenty....

of course...however, seems to me that at least two d-men will be selected in the top-three and i'm not opposed to one of berniers, guenther or eklund in a top-five spot...

I don't disagree with the tough sentiment expressed here.
The problem I have is who is replacing 60-65 pts at 1RW who has proven an ability to play with Jack?
FA for RW's absolutely suck this offseason...his replacement isn't there. And 2ho off this roster is bringing that in on a trade?
Would Risto, VO, +? be enough and if so, for whom?
I still like some Tuch, but not sure why Vegas would ever do that as their RhD is pretty, pretty good...Risto would be a 3rd pairing there...quite expensive. - IonSabres
I would like to sign him long-term but while a 60-point player is nothing to sneeze at, let's not act like it's what will get us over the hump, or that losing him is what will kill us. We're dead on arrival with him, that's a 6-year fact.
Especially with Mitts and Tage, Asplund, Routsalainen, Cozens coming along finally, if Eichel stays, Reinhart can be replaced. Trade, free agency, prospect breaking out...
I think solid, consistent goaltending, good depth, secondary scoring and confidence are more important than keeping or losing Reinhart. |

But at the same time at $10mavv he is getting "paid" at a very much higher rate during his RFA years, right?
His worth right now is ??? $4m???
So would a computation be reasonable at
$4
$5
$6
$7
$8
$9
$10
$11
------------
$60m = $7.5m
I'd do it |

with the way he has these kids playing, the odds get better with each game...whether it's the correct move won't be known until we're well into next season, possibly 2021-22...
my point is, can the team afford to gamble on another rookie nhl head coach (or in the case of stank, one with a handful of games behind the bench)?...that would make three in a row |

Dahlin was good before and after Coach Used Car Salesman.
With so many players playing so much better since the prior bum, it seems clear the prior coach was the overwhelming biggest issue. |

i think we're all in agreement that $6m (bare minimum) to $8m (the karlsson quotient) could very well be the range in which it gets done |

The most impressed I've been with any team the Sabres have played recently was the game against Pittsburgh where the Penguins dominated playing the 1-2-2.
I'm not sure the Penguins can play that well all the time, but if they do, they're going a long way. |

Karlsson signed for an AAV that was just above 10% of the cap, which would be $8.1M per for Dahlin.
Would Dahlin sign an 8 year deal for $66M? Maybe, but I don't think he would.
Would you offer him that deal right now to get him signed long term? - kingcong39
I think you're right on here. Bridge deal feels inevitable.

The difference with the specific in "The Don" vs the generic "rookie" is that we are seeing the "rookie The Don" in action against some pretty tough teams who have pressure on the to perform and he has the boys generally playing well with several key starters out.
If is much different than guessing with a projection on how a rookie will perform. |
