I agree with everything above.

Two quick adds:

- There was strong urging from multiple sources, including the Hospital for Sick Children, to keep the schools open if possible. The risk to mental health was much higher for kids.

- Teachers should have been considered frontline workers, and allowed to go in the first wave of inoculations.

- Atomic Wedgie

Obviously, I cannot be impartial about teachers. My opinion also runs contrary to what I discovered when I looked into the numbers, but I still agree that teachers should have been first. Their number of potential contacts was just too great, in an environment with very little adherence to policy (grade 1) and impossible to social distance because of class sizes. and it is critical for kids health and development and the function of our society as a whole that kids go to school.

If this pandemic taught people 1 thing, that thing should be that teachers are far more important than anyone stopped to think about.

Education is the area where I have the most problem with Ford and the reason I would not vote for him, or PC for that matter. I simply don't like his policies regarding schools.

He sincerely apologized for doing it with Hyman and Mikheyev out, when Ridditch is in net, and the Leafs need the two points, and when Nylander has looked the most dangerous of any Leaf the past few days.

Keefe had no choice but to accept that apology.

I think that's part of what I'm afraid of . . . you want the coach to enforce a consistent set of rules.

I've been feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work on my plate today so I'm just not doing it and taking it easy

LOL me also!

I had a "vacation" last week, and am now swamped and some of the stuff is stuff I don't know how I am going to do.

So I chose to ignore it. I will pay the price later.

I'm generally pretty productive but I'm giving myself a break today. I've probably had about 2.5 weeks off since July 2019 so giving myself a break until I get another chance to disconnect.

I think you need to look at things like sanitation, food delivery (you know both sides of the cycle) and basic infrastructure, fire, etc ahead of teachers but like I said, they’re up there

I was initially curious as to why it was a "may" miss the game as opposed to "will" miss the game. What type of contrition did Willy show or offer up that Kap didn't? I understood with Kapanen it was a recurring thing, which may have made it worse, but I - obviously - have no idea what's going on behind closed doors.

I think with Mikey maybe being out and Hyman they sort of need him.

My late father-in-law voted Tory his entire life. He wasn't militant or anything, and was never actually involved in politics, but that's the box he always ticked.

Then Mike Harris came along.

My mother-in-law was a teacher. My father-in-law never forgave Harris for how he treated the teachers. As far as I know, he never voted Conservative again.

Interesting - I"m not sure I still don't think the provincial government was leaving schools open when they shouldn't have but I guess I'm not shocked to hear there wasn't alot of spread happening AT school.

With all the protocols and supervision to make sure the protocols are followed at school (teachers watching over kids)it kind of makes sense.

Now what I would assume is kind of the situation you described where it's kid to kid spread outside school. I say this because every time I walk my dog I see gaggles of kids of all ages all hanging out together playing with no masks, in close contact etc. It's like "oh school is over off with the mask and eff the rules" and these kids generally have no parents with them at all.

The best was hearing and seeing a couple big groups of teens wandering down my street at 1230am on a Tuesday blasting music, screaming about how drunk they are while holding each other up etc. And the party they left from further down the street spilling out onto the street before someone opened their window 1950's style and told them to shut the (frank) up and that the cops had been called. They all scrambled inside pretty quickly after hearing that. lol

- Cush29

Oh man, this is a huge sore spot with me also.

I saw my own nieces and nephews (20-somethings) last summer, all drunk, no masks, partying it up at one of their birthday parties. It was startling.

So I was infuriated when they opened up vaccines to 18+ in hotspots.

Here's the thing, I think the infection rate in kids is less than a vaccinated adult.

The school thing is poorly presented and misunderstood.

I looked deeper into these numbers on the weekend during a PM discussion with cc.

What we are usually shown in a # of Outbreaks and schools are way out in front.

Until you realize that the number of outbreaks where the case count is 1 is almost the same as the number of outbreaks for every other case count combined.

further, the burden of infection in the schools was about half as high as the gen-pop.

On a smaller scale, my wife has not heard of one confirmed time when a spread happened in the school at her board. There was one kid who passed it to another kid in a different class, but the kids had a sleepover the weekend before. There have been a couple cases of multiple infections... but they have all been traced to a 3rd party source.

This strongly suggests that not much spreading is occurring in the school. Kids can get it, and they can spread it but they are very poor spreaders. This is perfectly in line with what we see with vaccinated people.

Be careful with vague terms like "outbreaks".

Only 1/2 the kids wear their masks, they get told to pull them up and as soon as you turn your back they pull it back down. 🤷🏻‍♂️

There’s a big age group between 20 somethings and wherever they were when they opened things up. Expanding eligibility in hotspots is the right thing to do to get things under control and ease pressure on hospitals.

Not everyone in that big age group was out drinking

My kid is 27. He and his girlfriend live on the 20th floor of an apartment in a hot spot in Toronto. He’s been looking forward to living there for years. All his friends are nearby. His doesn’t see anybody and doesn’t go anywhere. He’s trying like crazy to get a shot.

This is a perfect example.

1,167 over 5 days.
At the time, Ontario was averaging around 4000 per day.

So 1167/20000 = Roughly 5%

Teachers and students make up about 15% of the population of Toronto (from my research this weekend). Assuming that number is anywhere close, province-wide...

You are talking about 15% of the population with 5% of the cases. The burden in schools is lower than the gen pop. and schools are non-socially distanced, and are (were) indoors.

How is him getting a vaccine shot now going to change that situation during the next 3-6 months?

Pretty simple solution:

Open up bars and restaurants to people under 18 and over the age of 40.

Or maybe for just the restaurants in my neighbourhood.

Pretty please?
