Some old Benning quotes for fun...

I look forward to seeing more of Sutter in the playoffs. Can’t wait!

He did look good for a few games in the playoff thingy, last summer.

ouch. some public statements age badly...

I do really like the young core (I'd include: Brock, Elias, Bo, JTM, Quinn, Thatcher, Hogz) and am looking forward to seeing what Podkolzin will bring.

Did Volpatti and Corrado not clearly indicate my level of seriousness?

I have failed

I think it’s a great question though. Look at the times waiver scraps were picked up and what was the resulting impact. As it turns out, not much impact at all. Makes you wonder why do it. Just play your prospects and AHL fodder.

This year, it makes sense, with the travel challenges, but generally I agree. You have to be pretty bad to think that another teams cast off will improve your team.

It's easier for JB to make a waiver claim than a trade. No negotiating.

Sure. 1g, 5a, minus 2 in 17 games. His possession metrics are way below league average, whether Corsi, Fenwick, or other. He actually got more offensive zone starts than he did defensive zone starts so this idea of a “two-way” player narrative is not exactly accurate.

Looks can be deceiving.

Technically picking up Dale Weise on waivers resulted in getting Highmore, so that's something

Yup.

The team is what I expected from them though. Decent enough goaltending, an average defense, and some decent players in the top of the lineup.
The team chemistry and systems, well that is below average, as is the depth.
After 7 years of drafting, you would think the drafting guru, would have some decent depth players to fill in, rather than the Megna and Chaput waiver pickups, that Benning has supplied for the team.
Oh well, always next year.

Toronto doesnt have any drafted depth players.

sometimes you just need an NHL-caliber replacement-level player to fill a hole and the waiver wire is an easy place to find them. That's all I think Vesey and Boyd are. Other teams have done the same.

Got tied up with the NHL's Turner Sports announcement this morning, but the new blog is up now.

Some praise for Jake Virtanen, criticism of Jimmy Vesey, and lots of concern about how the Canucks are going to get ground down if they have to keep playing from behind...

How many times in the history of the NHL has a player that was claimed off waivers turned out to be anything other than below average? I can think of two: Martin Gelinas and Aaron Volpatti. Maybe Frank C0Rrado if you want to be generous.

Grabner? Kunitz was a good one.
