I have a hard time understanding the reluctance to wear a mask. If you don't want to wear one because someone demands it, simply do it because it definitely reduces the virus's ability to spread to another person. It certainly cannot hurt in any way. The cherry on top is that it also helps reduce cold and flu transmission...these may not kill most people but they sure make you feel like crap. Its not a political statement, its good citizenship - DANCER
I don’t get it either. |

So is it true if I get tested that the test won’t detect I have it in my nasal passage and therefore show me as not having covid when I do - wcorvette
Generally speaking, those who are vaccinated and tested for breakthrough infections are going to be symptomatic people. Asymptomatic people are the kind who have mild to no symptoms, which means the infection is in the upper resp. area.
We don't know yet what % of asymptomatic breakthrough infections occur, because the people in this category are not getting tested for Covid. Point is you could be vaccinated and not show any signs and still be a transmitter.
Here is a nice article that talks about the key difference between Covid and the other Coronaviruses.
"Two open doors
Although the known human coronaviruses can infect many cell types, they all mainly cause respiratory infections. The difference is that the four that cause common colds easily attack the upper respiratory tract, whereas MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV have more difficulty gaining a hold there, but are more successful at infecting cells in the lungs.
SARS-CoV-2, unfortunately, can do both very efficiently. That gives it two places to get a foothold, says Shu-Yuan Xiao, a pathologist at the University of Chicago, Illinois. A neighbour’s cough that sends ten viral particles your way might be enough to start an infection in your throat, but the hair-like cilia found there are likely to do their job and clear the invaders. If the neighbour is closer and coughs 100 particles towards you, the virus might be able get all the way down to the lungs, says Xiao.
These varying capacities might explain why people with COVID-19 have such different experiences. The virus can start in the throat or nose, producing a cough and disrupting taste and smell, and then end there. Or it might work its way down to the lungs and debilitate that organ. How it gets down there, whether it moves cell by cell or somehow gets washed down, is not known, says Stanley Perlman, an immunologist at the University of Iowa in Iowa City who studies coronaviruses."

Depends on the kind of test. Usually, the test would be nasal swab, which would certainly detect it.
But more relevant to your discussion with Dkos: he may be vaccinated, but it could still find a foothold in his upper respiratory passages, and transmit it, while not falling sick himself. - PT21
Exactly. I’m no covid expert, but my understanding is that the experts still don’t know if a vaccinated person can pass on the virus to others. Someone posted a comment that was very critical of mask wearing and implied that people who wear masks are just virtue signaling. Just wanted to say that that’s not why I wear a mask.
Additionally, if you are the president of a country that is requiring people to wear masks in public places you better wear a mask when you’re in public. |

Is it wrong? - Hesh_
Here’s my take. I’m sure not popular.
I believe the original discussion started with topic of building down the middle or some sort of... I agree 100% with that. I think team is all slotted wrong in the key areas. Not that the players are necessarily bad but they aren’t in position to succeed long term. Short term yes all can have some success at times. For example we currently usually have at center
Coots
Hayes
Patrick
Laughton
Yes sometimes Patrick moved down or wing and same with Laughton but you get the drift. Anyways they’re slotted wrong. Should be
- - - we don’t have #1 center
Coots
Hayes
Laughton/Patrick
Yes any of those players can move up short term and have success but they’d succeed more not slotted up in line up.
The d having bruan on top pair. Do I really have to say more? Provy still on pp? Why? Slotted wrong. And I don’t believe provy is a true #1. At best a 1 b probably be a great #3.
Anyways bill is in the belief coots is a #1 so I will never agree with him. We can just watch the same old same old year after year and make excuses for play.
So bill is wrong because he’s comparing nyi going and getting pageau. They are slotted correctly and is different going to get 3rd line center that can also move up in lineup
Barzal
Nelson
Pageau
Us getting Hayes isn’t the problem. Paying him 7 mil is the problem. But ok if you can live with a player that should be slotted 3c that can move up here and there fine. But the true problem is lack of 1c fix that and everything else falls into place. How to get that is the big ? |

Thank you
So of the 79 million who were fully vaccinated and only 7157 tested positive the contention is that the Asymptomatic are unknown because they didn’t get tested? Though the study did actually include some asymptomatic positive results.
Completely agree on the viral load, also heard that they are now saying asymptomatic don’t spread as easy maybe due to viral load

I did not know that, I assume they were ancillary positives (people were being treated for other conditions).
Yes, outside the trials, it is difficult to know how many asymptomatic breakthroughs occurred. The loss of taste/smell is very telling, but would you really go and be tested if you had a mild cold and were vaccinated? Surely not. So, the 0.00007% is surely a underestimate as far as transmissibiity is concerned. It is more informative about your own chances of falling sick.
But more to DKos' point though: getting vaccinated and wearing a mask is a little like staying sober if you are the designated driver. Its not just you that could be harmed.

You can 100% pass the virus on to others despite the vaccine. The Vaccine allows your body to detect the virus quicker and fight it effectively. Vaccine wont stop the virus from getting onto you and then transferring elsewhere by touch. Many people think the Flu shots fake because they get "sick" afterwards. You are supposed to. Thats the reaction of you Body fighting the virus. A Vaccine is pretty much injecting the virus into you.

i like Schwartz. Schenn is really impacted when he is out of the line up - CRUSH IT LIKE ME
Yes, that the problem with Schwartz, he can't stay on the ice enough, but when he does play and is healthy, he is a very good player.

Yeah I have no issue being cautious even if I am vaccinated, my wife is not and had underlying conditions and is allergic to antibiotics and steroids.
As far as getting it and passing it, the just is still out, I have my guess from what I have seen and read but cautiously optimistic

You are very right. You would technically need to be infected before the vaccine kicks in. The antibodies produced would just kick the invaders out very quickly, so the swab tests would not detect the infection as the concentrations of the virus would be too low post kicking out. But that doesn't mean infection never occurred.
Nor would a blood test tell you that info. You would not know if the high amount of antibodies are due to the infection or vaccination or both.

Hayes is having a crappy year. He had a good one last year. Either which way, the Flyers still needed an additional productive center. In today's NHL, teams need three lines that can score. Two won't cut it. - bmeltzer
Has he though? His production is pretty on par with his career stats. He's at a 44 point pace for a 82 game season. I do think he could be a 50-60 point guy if he could get some consistency.

It's very much the same thing. The Flyers came into this season hoping Patrick would step up and be that third productive center. It hasn't happened and Hayes has also had a bad season. It didn't help that Frost was lost for the season four periods into his season.
Last year, the Islanders lacked a 3rd center to supplement Barzal and Nelson. They went out and got Pageau. - bmeltzer
We have three centers expecting to be our top three centers. Now we need another one. You sarcastically named Barzel, Nelson and Pageau in comparison. The islanders are having success with their three centers and we’re not, while we’re possibly thinking of adding a 4th. You are wrong within your example because it’s not the same thing!! |

Traditional vaccines induce immunity by injecting a dead virus typically and letting the body react to it.
mRNA vaccines work by injecting a small amount of genetic material (or rather instructions for cells to produce that material) of the virus and letting body react to it.
That is my understanding. For the purposes of what he said, it doesn't make a difference. The antibodies produced are only going to repel the virus if it manages to get in in the first place.

Flyers are playing really really well tho. Like I don't remember them ever executing and making decisions at this level all year. They're going to the net, being aggressive at the bluelines, not throwing the puck away...
This is the hockey equivalent of young Forrest Gump shaking off his leg braces and running miraculously. Run Forrest run. |
