“You look at it, and it’s the coaches’ jobs to make sure the players are ready to play,” he said. “We’ve been showing up not ready to play. I mean, the guys have gotten off to slow starts in, what, 19 of the last 21 games” and allowed the first goal.
Lol what? Jesus this guy is clueless. You're telling me the core of this team doesn't know how to get up for games? And it's on the coaches?
“But I don’t think there’s just one thing that you can point to” for the poor season, he said. “All I can tell you is that we’re going to have a busy summer. I’m determined to get his thing back on track, and that ‘s everything from spending to the cap and giving the resources to Chuck and A.V.”

You're absolutely right. The first time I saw Dave Scott mention spending to the cap (I think it was in conjunction with the hiring of Fletcher) I knew this franchise was doomed with him at the helm. And I think is the real reason Hextall was jettisoned. Scott wanted a "yes" man in the position who would cater to his every whim - Hextall was definitely not that guy. Snider believed in Hextall's plan, which is why he hired him.
Scott is a career executive, not a maverick owner like Snider. As long as the broadcast advertising money continues to come in, and people attend the games, Scott is happy. He couldn't care less about winning - it's all about the revenue for him.
Excellent post, BiggE. I am hoping Myers comes around but other than, agree with all you said. I especially love the Brindy and Dineen recommendations.
Unfortunately, this guy Dave Scott, based on the comments and quotes posted above, seems like a corporate moron. Every single thing I read about him reeks of short-sighted showy moves this off-season and not the fundamental sort of changes that are needed. - PT21
Yeah, having a corporate robot like Scott in charge rather than an owner who truly cared like Snider is a major concern.
Re Myers, like Hart, I think in the long run he’ll be fine. I’m much more pessimistic about Patrick. Lindblom is a total wildcard. Hopefully a full and healthy off season will allow him to fully regain his strength and conditioning. Lord knows, that kid deserves a break!
I'm more concerned about the Phantoms. Where will the prospects come from if they can't compete?

Agree with both of your posts, if you can't get RB then I think you need to fire both assistants, send the message to AV that he needs to take control and not delegate it all. I don't mean that he should run both the PP and PK but a message needs to be sent if AV stays.
Some posters mentioned the numerous lineup changes, I agree mostly, especially in a short season. On the other side the bad play called for something, AV just did not push the right buttons, if those buttons even existed.
I do think all of the players will end up learning a lot of from this season, all will be in peak shape, with a chip on their shoulder. If AV stays he needs to bring the learnings and chip on his should forward also. Add the one D, Add one key piece in the O, maybe an affordable speed piece or two and a Hart bounce back and we should be much better.

in other news with Malkin back the shxt show will continue and has the potential to be the biggest shxt show this season
or the Pens bring out the best of the Flyers, which could still be a shxt show.
That’s probably the worst solution to the problem. A buyout only saves them 666k total on the cap over the next 4 years. If they traded ( or even gave him away) and retained 50% they save 4.5 M over 2 years.
I actually think he stays.

and should if they can't replace what he brings or the cost is just too much. Leaving him on the 3rd pair is ok if they rest of the D is balanced with the right mix

I agree with that. I do think they see York “replacing what he brings” but not exactly sure when that will happen.

What should worry us all is that career executives may not understand the game, but they do usually understand the business. Scott has given us Gritty and the New City Terrace/millennial lounge and the statements above.
Which tells us loud and clear where the future of Flyers and perhaps NHL lies. There is more $ to be had by going for entertainment and marketing and less for tradition and winning.
It's not about Scott. He is but the rooster on the weather vane. The winds blows in that direction.
Very little attention given to Flyers goaltending woes as source of season disaster. But Carter Hart generated -25 GSAx from Charlie O'Connor column and Evolving Hockey. That's almost 1 goal per game played and a massive negative delta from last season. Theoretically it takes into account some/much of the defensive failures and opponent shot quality. So while the entire blogosphere blasts our crappy defense men/team, the real failure per EH was poor goaltending. I believe Moose also underperformed, as of the last time O'Connor cited his GSAx as well, just the numbers were less poor at time of column. That may be worse by now considering his last few games. Like most, I am willing to give CH the benefit of the recovery doubt, but I also need to see something out of our last bunch of goalie draft pics like Sandstrom and Ersson. It doesnt appear Lyon has NHL game in him.

I’ve seen about enough of this stuff, the goaltending wasn’t good but the play in front of them was just as bad. You can’t watch these games and actually think we would have been fine with average goaltending can you?

I agree that goaltending wasn't good but I think the play in front of them wasn't just as bad, it was far worse.

Interview in its entirety says he and Fletch like the core, and see the core as responsible for last year's success, and the downturn due to Niskanen leaving and bad goaltending.
So expect the protected list to include Jake and JvR.

Two of the most recent games against the Devils were ones the Flyers may have won with even average goaltending. In general, team D dragged down the goaltending first and then the goaltending, in turn, dragged down most everything else.

You have to expose Jake’s contract. No offense to him, but in a flat cap world, that AAV is so tough that I doubt Seattle bites. I certainly would not pay to lose him. If he is part of a trade to get D or a shooter, then hopefully it’s a deal that makes sense.

Nobody is giving up a d man of any value for Jake’s poopty contract as one of the returns.
We either trade him with significant money retained, take back other trash contracts or are stuck with him. All more reason to make sure JVR and Ghost’s contracts gets moved this summer.

I simply do not get the same vibe that many here get regarding Scott. Here is an excerpt from Sam Carchidi’s article that was referenced earlier today:
Scott, the Flyers’ relatively new head honcho, is more reserved and hands-off when compared to Snider. But he cares deeply, works hard at his job, and, though he has other duties for Comcast Spectacor, says he is invested “24/7” in the hockey team.
His style is not to interfere. He trusts the people running the team on a daily basis and relies on their knowledge to build the Flyers’ first Stanley Cup champion since 1975.
Scott knew Snider for 20 years and worked closely with him for 2½ years before Snider died in 2016.
“He was always about hiring the right people and letting them do their job,” Scott said. “That’s what I’m doing. That’s what you have to do.”

To not expose Jake and JVR’s contracts would be unbelievably foolish. They need room for another quality center, a top pair D and an upgrade at backup goalie. Those things are not coming for free.
Neither the coaches nor the players or the gm should be allowed to stay. The poor starts have been a thing since 2013. It has happened during different coaching regimes. That means players at least are a big reason.
