Get someone who is actually qualified to build a team. The one thing that I appreciate about Jim is that he actually rebuilt the scouting staff and got them on the same page. Well, the armature ones anyway.
They don’t have any prospects coming that look capable of handling that role (3C) in the “two year” window.
My solution, wait until a month after free agency and grab yourself a few bottom six guys. Realize that you aren’t actually two years from competing for a cup, but two years from being capable of starting to put the team together. Decide which of your guys you’re committed to and sell the others. Set your cap situation up such that you will have the space to make a splash when you’re ready.
Yes, but he hit the Canucks at just the right time to grow into his role. I think he'd claw his way into the top 6 of any team eventually. - Load Management
Agreed. It shows the lack of depth this team has that he earned a top 6 role. Like I said , on a good team he would be a 3rd line asset.
Why would you demote a player who is arguably your best winger to play C on the “3rd” line? He is a much better winger than he is a C, and he is much more productive with top six talent than he is with scrubs. - 1970vintage
The idea is that our top 3 lines can play 50+ minutes a night getting equal time and the lines rolling the best get more play time. Our 4th line plays 10 or less and sometimes barely plays at all. It is easier to get a top 6 winger on the team to play with EP or Bo and have a top 6 c in Miller play the 3LC position than it is to do the reverse. I see it more as having a 1st line, 2nd line A and 2nd line B.

Yeah, I disagree. Jim has been looking for top six wingers for almost a decade and hasn’t been able to find them. I think Miller is much better as a winger than a C and you just create a different problem if you slide him down the roster.
If Beagle really is done I guess Sutter for two more years it is.
Is it really two years? I just don’t see much else coming up through the system, which means they are going to have to fill their needs through free agency, and that scares the crap out of me. I mean, maybe Rathnone can be a new Edler, and Woo a Bieksa, but beyond that and Podkolzin there’s not much to be excited about fir the next what, four years? - 1970vintage
We have a top 10(potentially top 5 if we keep losing) pick right now(currently at 7oa and can only drop to 9oa) That alone will be the addition we need in 2 years. We will also likely be bad next year unless MAJOR changes are made, and that could be another improvement the year after when we are looking to compete.
The way I see it, is that you have 2 options with Miller.
1. You find a way to dump Eriksson, LTIRetire Beagle at the end of season(reports are that he is not going to be healthy next season) and probably LTIRetire Roussell(same knee he had surgery on, probably too much of a risk for him to play again on it) and use that spare 12m to improve your top 4 and change your forward group to match what Vegas does. 3 lines and a grinding line that doesn't see the ice unless you are up a goal, and they just hit and wear down other teams 2nd and 3rd line. Roll something like:
X - EP - Boeser
Hogger - Bo - Podk
Pearson - Miller - X(Lind?)
X(gadj?) - X - Mackewan
12m is used to upgrade all X's. Maybe even put Podk with Ep and Brock and find the upgrade for Bo.
2. Trade Miller at an all time high as he has proven to be a top line player and should yield more than we gave up. Those assets should be ready in 1-2 years when JB see's us competing and will come in with an extremely valuable ELC. Get high picks for 1-2 years that will also help us when we are ready. - Retinalz
Also have to take the cap into factor. JTM will be coming up for a raise at the same time as Bo (and potentially Petey and Hughes depending on their contracts). That's a lot of juggling to do in a few years time.

Maybe a coaching change but I can't see FA turfing Benning yet. - LordHumungous
FA has been paying Benning for 7 years, a lot of money. I imagine he expected things to be at a different stage than what they are now. At the end of the day, this is a business for Francesco, and his business isn't doing very well, so I wouldn't be surprised if Benning goes sooner than you think.

I honestly don't know how or why he would be brought back for another year. I could see if they have the 8th pick or something he wanting to stay for the draft? But the scouts are there for a reason so also why not just go with them...

I think there will be more available this off season than in years past. We don't want a 3c IMO, we want a 2c to play our 3c. That is harder to find than a 2 RW/LW and we already have it in Miller. Podk plays with EP and Boeser, we get a RW to play with Bo and Hogger, and Pearson/Lind play with miller. Suddenly we are as deep as any team in the league. Find a way to improve our D and suddenly the team is turned around. This of course requires LE gone, which is difficult. This is why trading Miller for profit makes sense. His contract is up in 2 years and will seek a big raise when we will already be paying EP, Hughes, Boeser and Bo wanting a raise as well. Miller is the odd man out and the top prospect coming in on an ELC gives us something that Miller simply can't, a top 6 player on an ELC.

Realistically it isn't going very well for 30 other teams with no fans, making it the perfect time to be bad and get high picks that will be coming in to draw fans when they can come back in full force.

Again, I just don’t think that’s the case. Jim hasn’t been able to find a winger for Bo since 2013. And I disagree that they are as deep as any team in the league. You don’t need a top six player on an ELC if you don’t have $30m tied up in your bottom 6. I mean, sure it helps. But expecting your prospects to be the best players on the team their first couple seasons is not the way to go about it IMO.

Do you still see that happening after the Aquilini vote of JB confidence? - LordHumungous
Yes. I don’t believe a word that comes out of Canuck ownership or management. Time and time again we have witnessed this group talk and act nonsensical.
Don’t underestimate FA’s fanaticism. He’s emotional and cares what other fans and media say about his franchise. He’s acutely aware of the public’s “mood” towards this team. If the heat gets turned up on JB, FA will react. After all, this is about entertainment and this team is light years from being entertaining.
Saying that, FA might just let JB’s contract expire and see what’s available at that time. Much like what they are doing with Green.

I agree 300%. How is this current roster going to be cup competitive in two years?
For all the wonders JB has done drafting, the pool is still very shallow. Any “prospect” with any talent (ability to have an impact) are already playing for the big club.
For JB to have recently said they are two years away is obviously full of shit.
People wonder why I don't like Thomas Drance, its not that I don't like him, its just that he knows jackshit about hockey. The idiot actually thinks the Canucks have good coaching.
The Athletic’s Thomas Drance on what he’s hearing with the Travis Green contract situation and what he thinks of the last offer the Vancouver Canucks made him.
“I haven’t heard a lot about that offer, to be totally being honest with you Rick. I think that fundamentally nothing has changed on this front, right. Whether an offer was made or not, the sense I get and what I’m hearing is, that there is no movement.
So, that to me suggests anyway that if an offer was made, it wasn’t particularly a competitive one. And I don’t really understand what’s going on here, overall. But what I do sort of get the sense of, is that the chatter and any chatter last week about sort of momentum, and an offer coming, an offer has been tendered, hasn’t necessarily resulted in the sides being any closer. Which I think speaks volumes too about perhaps the intentions of who is exactly is leaking those details.
My view, and it’s no secret, I think between Travis Green, Nolan Baumgartner, Ian Clark, Newell Brown, like I think this team has been extremely well coached over the last three years. I think it’s been a strength of the team, and I actually think one thing that poses really tricky questions for his club going forward and into this offseason is, if you agree with me and think this team is well coached. If you look at the goaltending they’ve received and say ‘hey, this team has had good goaltending’, and you still think, that they’re still the 23rd best team in the league by points percentage at the moment. Goaltending and coaching often hide a lot of flaws. If this clubs looking like this, looking in a vanity mirror gentleman, what’s reality look like?”

In 2 years we will have a large amount of cap tied up in our core of EP, Hughes, Boeser and Bo. We will need ELC's to round out our top 6, like every top team in the league tends to need. The days of getting your top players for 7m or less(mackinnon, pastrnak, etc) is over. It will now be big contracts like McDavid, Eichel, Matthews, Marner for your top guys. ELC's will soon be extremely valuable as teams can only afford a few big contracts.

Treliving May be available. He’s got experience and all that. Just look at the powerhouse he built in Calgary the last 7 years. Well probably take your 2nd round pick to allow you to sign him as he’s still under contract.

Weather you agree with him or not, Benning certainly thinks his coaches have done a good job, and his (Drance) last point is spot on.
