I have always been hesitant to jump on the “fire Tre” bandwagon because I didn’t believe there was a better option available. Well now there is one in Gorton as long as ownership isn’t too cheap to bring him in.

Don’t get me wrong bringing in Davidson to hire a guy would be a good start but it’s the GM that makes most of the decisions and Gorton’s resume in NYR is too good to pass up for someone unproven. He had his few cons in the trouba and kreider contracts (although signing kreider made sense when the didn’t know they’d get lafreniere) and you can bet he won’t have the same success with attracting players to Calgary as what he did in NY or get as lucky in the draft lottery but outside of all that he has a good record with drafting and the player personnel decisions he has made he has mostly been on the right side of.

The even larger part of it is that he didn’t deserve to get fired. Like I said he had his luck and a prime destination but it’s still impressive that the rangers rebuild was going as fast as what it was. There’s a lot of terrible options but he isn’t one of them, what’s worse than perpetual mediocrity has got to be the perpetual hell that the oilers and sabres have been stuck in during the past decade and this organization is pretty much 1 bad GM choice away from that.

You can’t forget that he also had a 2nd overall pick and a 1st overall pick, basicly got Fox for free, that tends to help a little bit with a rebuild.
I’d hire both as I don’t see Treliving actually rebuilding this team.

If they can trade Backlund this off season I’d jump at it. He earns too much for what he contributes.

Like to see them sign Ryan again,2 years -1.5/

Who’s everyone like for the draft this year? Can’t believe Calgary and Vegas are the only 2 teams without a top 2 pick in any draft.

Looch waives his contract. Man I’m glad we got rid of Neal.

And the Seattle Krakan take from the Calgary Flames——————-?
Oliver Kylington! Yes? No?

Flames should sign Ritchie in the off season, he’s a perfect Sutter player.

Who’s going to backup Markstrom next year? Any ideas?

So some are thinking that Treliving is this sly GM hiding Mathew Phillips in the minors so Seattle skips over him. Is he really that smart? Is Phillips that good?

-I am in favour of moving backlund, especially if we resign Ryan. I don’t think there’s a market for monahan this off-season which means backlund is likely our 3C as of right now. I like the two way game that he brings but Ryan is perfectly serviceable on the PK, sutter has tried monahan in that role and lindholm is a pretty damn good 200 ft player. As far as trade value goes I think that backlund flys so under the radar that not many teams will value him as much as we do. For what I can only guess is the reasons Minnesota doesn’t want monahan they may be interested in backlund. Personally I think anything less than one of their firsts this year plus Rask’s contract would be an undersell. Minnesota fans probably wouldn’t agree with that but I would say trust us, back’s is better than you know.

-For the Draft, wishful thinking: guenther, Clarke.

Realistic: Lucius (probably my 1st choice), Mctavish.

Trade down/not the worst reach: caulemans, bolduc, L’heureaux, morrow(definitely would need to be a trade down.

Assuming we stay around the 7-11 spot outside of these names I would prefer a forward as I have confidence in our young LHD prospects

-Not saying I would protect him but if lucic’s contract was what he was worth I would have him on my team 7 days of the week.

-kylington is probably the best high risk/high reward player that should be selected. Outside of a few defensive mistakes (which come with his style of play) he has looked great this year and definitely should be in the lineup over Nestorov.

-yes to keeping ritichie on the condition that it’s league minimum and he’s played as a 12/13th forward he is. If sutter wants to play his as a top six all year then definitely not.

- For a backup G go to capfriendly’s armchair GM and take your pick for whoever you think you can get for 2 million or under. Personally I wanted to target Anton forsberg before the sens resigned him and I think he could still be available for trade if the sens only extended him for expansion implications.

- Phillip’s started off the year on fire but has cooled down. I give him a shot next year but it will likely be a make or break year for him.

That’s why I said not including the factors that brought those players (+panerin) there they would still be left with one the of best prospect pools in the league. If anything Gorton’s biggest flaw has been his stubbornness to fire Quinn who has not been great for their prospects development at the NHL level. So if let’s say the rangers are currently a year away from being at least a playoff team they would probably still be somewhere around 2 years away.

I agree both would be ideal but given the cheapness of our owners when it comes to management I’d have to think it will be one or the other and if I had to chose I’d chose Gorton.

It seems the major flaw of this organization is to always look to not pay top $$$ for management and coaching. Pretty easy to see you get what you pay for.

What’s all the hype behind Groton? what amazing moves did he make? Maybe I’m wrong here but didn’t he ink...

Trouba 8x7
Krieder 6.5x7
Shatterkirk 6.5x4

Those contracts don’t looked great too me.

It helps when you’re a GM of an organization where players want to play, too. Fox and Panarin were only going to play for the Rags.

Not to mention picking top 2 in back to back years.

I look more at what he did in Boston than anything but that was what seems like forever ago.

Like I said at the start I’m hesitant to fire treliving because I didn’t believe there was a better option available. I’m well aware that Gorton is not sakic or yzerman but I would argue he’s at least on par with Tre if not better. The reality is unless we bring in a no-name assistant like we did with Tre (which I’ll admit turned out alright) we are likely looking at guys that have been fired for doing a bad job somewhere else. The only reason Gorton is out of a job is because Dolan’s an idiot and regardless of the New York advantage he did have the team on a path towards success.

As far as those contracts goes yes they’re far from good but at least there still decent players after that.

I think the advantage just speeds up the timeline if anything. If you swap out the lottery wins for where the would have been they likely wind up with 1 of Seider/cozens/broberg/zegras/boldly and Jarvis/Holloway/amirov. Add in another top draft selection this year and next year to take place of panerin and fox and the rangers are still in a pretty good spot moving forward.
