this is not true outside of internet message boards...looks like you're equating him too much with teddy...he's coached top-end talent throughout his career and has been successful with them...not only that, your lecavaliers, st. louis, richards and panarins had numbers under torts that were slightly ahead of their career numbers...you said they'd turn dahlin into matt irwin when jones and werenski occupy 2nd and third spots in columbus over the past six seasons...

and forget panarin...he wasn't sticking no matter what...it was well known he was looking for the bright lights...bob was after big bucks that cbj most definitely wasn't offering

- Michael Pachla

Jones and Werenski are not Dahlin and Jokiharju. The stylistic difference is enormous. I have no doubt Torts would love a big bruiser like Risto though

While this is true, their drafting and developing has been very good for the past decade and they have made some very good trades.

There is an alarming trend, however, of players wanting out. Nash, RyJo, Panarin, Bob, PLD...

I can tell you, there are much worse places to be than Columbus, but it is very low-key and under-the-radar... Is it how the team is run? Facilities?

The fan base is already one of the most loyal in the NHL. They love the Blue Jackets out here. I have not been to a game since moving here, Pandemic and everything... But everyone tells me the atmosphere at the arena is excellent and it has always looked like it. They were as loud as any during playoff home games on television, too...

And they were becoming a solid team until this season. Even after they lost Panarin and Bobrovsky, they managed to make the playoffs. They made enough trades and roster changes to be competitive in a shortened season but fell off a cliff and played their hand when they traded Savard and their Captian, Foligno, both for 1st round picks.

They just announced Torts is not returning, so, do they do a full rebuild or trade some of their draft capital to bring in some more skill?

Throw CBJ into the Jack ECHL Sweepstakes.
Let's get the competition up to 10 teams...

Fair enough. I hate getting pissed off at hypotheticals so I should have avoided this conversation entirely. I think he's a very bad idea but I'll leave it at that

I think he’d get the best results from most of this team who’s been coddled by two player friendly coaches who were horrible at implementing a tough-to-play-against system.

I think they’d also be ready to play almost every night which has rarely happened in a decade

It seems like he works with less than others because offensive talent has no interest in sticking around for Torts. The Larrys love him
- jcragcrumple

Can you find documented proof of these wild claims.
No offense, but your narrative runs counter to everything I have heard/read.

Panarin, Duchene and PLD got away from him. Laine is useless under Torts. He's not an offensive guy

He is ending his CBJ tenure with almost no offensive talent

Without tough to play against players, how does this go? Seems like an odd match, and a job he wouldn't even be interested in.

you said that torts throttles the back end and, for all intents and purposes, would turn dahlin into irwin...and it's so not true...werenski and jones, who are much closer to dahlin than they are to risto, are examples of offensive defensemen who thrived under torts...and not only that, they made one of the better top-pairings in the league despite being 23 and 26, respectively

We absolutely have those players, including our last two first rounders in Quinn and Cozens. Asplund, Girgensons, Skinner, Reinhart are all guys who will go to dirty areas and score greasy goals.

I also think Mittelstadt is developing that exact type of game as well

Surprised you see it that way. This team is almost entirely soft, perimeter players in my book.

I think there’s this perception that Torts loves unskilled players and that’s the furthest from the truth IMO.

Idk, he’s a 3-4 year tops coach. But I’d bet on him getting this draught over with

The important ones?

Eichel and Reinhart are far from perimeter players. And there’s nothing in Cozens game that says that either

Olofsson would not be a Torts guy.

Well, as has been stated here several times, and written about by many others in the media; Panarin and Bob wanted out for different reasons totally unrelated to Torts...bright lights/big city and money respectively.

PLD had a beef with GM K as did Josh Anderson during contract negotiations in which K plays very aggressive hard ball with RFA's. Read up on it, very, very well documented with lots of quotes by GM K.

I'm not informed enough on Duchy. Laine speaks for itself.

I truly think your issue cited are more aligned to GM K and CBJ as a small market team in nowheresville than it is Torts.

No doubt he is tough, but he holds everyone to a sta card and demands it...with no teachers pets getting special treatment. Most players respect that..even though they may not like the heat at the time.

Ok, I'm done on this subject...Torts is going to NYRs is my bet anyway.

Well all we can hope for is they make the right choice as Coach for this team, Adams and Karmanos hire a coach that fits there vision. Not another coach that doesn't run a system that doesn't fit the players you have.

Good post.
Sequence should be
-set the vision for the team
-define the player-profiles that fit that vision
-acquire players that fit the Profiles
-hire coaches who can coach systems that fit the vision.

If the Pegula's have learned anything in their time as owners of two franchises is that changing direction every 2 years is the absolute worst mistake to make. When constantly changing direction the roster composition becomes a mixed bag of different styles that dont mesh well.

I hope we have are vision already, I like what this team was doing the last 20 games of the year. Bring in a Coach that will continue with this growth, which IMO is already here and bring in the 4 or 5pcs that could push you to the next level.

in 2019-20 rasmus dahlin averaged 15:50 evtoi while viking 55 averaged 18:05

in 2020-21 dahlin saw 18:27 evtoi, viking 55 18:13

year over year dahlin saw a significant uptick in 5v5 often times playing against the top lines in the league...his '19-20 +/- was -7 while his '20-'21 +/- is a league-worst -36

- Michael Pachla

But that -36 though- Ralph's fault 100%

Risto got lucky under Ralph- puck luck

I think Torts would be a great fit in Buffalo with the fan base. I won't be surprised "a-tall" if they choose him. I think his personality is exactly what the Sabres fan base craves. If I'm analyzing Terry's mind, I think he's more brash than a typical Terry pick so that doesn't work in his favor.

Idk, we'll just have to wait and see

yup

two main reasons why torts won't be in buffalo:

1. torts is anything but a yes-man, something t-pegs seems to crave
2. rags will probably go after him hard

as far as the fans, i think the opposite...i think a large majority would hate for him to be head coach of the sabres

Torts also has the Buffalo/Rochester connections that Uncle Terry loves....

Tortorella's coaching career began with the American Hockey League (AHL)'s Rochester Americans and the ECHL's Virginia Lancers. He was also an assistant coach for the AHL's New Haven Nighthawks and Rochester Americans, and the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, Phoenix Coyotes, and New York Rangers. He won the Calder Cup with the 1996 Rochester Americans.

- Gr8daygo

Remember when the fan said something about mucklers wife? Torts went into the crowd and grabbed the guy by the tie ,if I remember correctly. I think he recieved a couple game suspension....

That went along way in the lockerroom, like getting punched in the face by kevin killer... timber style

I agree totally.
Only caveat is Jack's positioning staying or going...that drives alot of other decisions as you have posted about as well.

Also seems like a strange fit with Adams.

Nothing really feels like a good fit here, except that he's available.
