Lifted this from the Athletic....
Every week, I feel like I end up saying some variation of “Jeff Carter was an ideal acquisition for the Penguins,” but … Jeff Carter was an ideal acquisition for the Penguins, even before his four-goal Thursday against the Sabres. Jim Rutherford’s 2020 deadline forward acquisitions — Patrick Marleau, Evan Rodrigues and Conor Sheary — had three. Total. In 31 games. |

Rutherford made trades for the sake of making trades and just hoped they would work. The Sheary trade showed that.
It's amazing how quietly they kept things about wanting Carter. I dont remember seeing anything until it happened. They havent done much, but I like what Hextall and Burke have brought to the team so far. |

That’s a garbage comparison. Trade deadline last year had the Pens going into the playoffs with multiple season ending injuries. JR had to add depth across the whole offence just to ice a team. Were they the best trades? No but this is a lazy blurb omits key context from the discussion. |

Especially since Rodrigues has been solid for us now. I think Marleau got the short end of the stick too. Seemed more ready to just get going then covid hit. The Pens didn't want to be in that bubble. And it showed. |

I remember being so confident heading into the bubble because the pens had been practicing so much earlier than the Habs... Price just took over that series and Murray couldn't stop a beach ball. |

Murray continuing to start over Jarry was probably deflating as well. |

Marleau was a bad target. Happens.
I still don’t know what to make of the Kahun trade. I need to know what was going on behind the scenes to have an actual opinion on it. Seems like keeping Kahun was untenable so Rutherford tried to one-for-one directly replace him with Sheary who had been successful here before. Sheary is probably one of the most polarizing players of recent history in this team so I know a lot won’t agree, but I understand what he was doing in hind sight. Yeah at the time I hated the trade because we didn’t know that there might have been something weird going on with Kahun |

Valtteri Puustinen has some flash to his game for sure. The attached highlight video shows some sweet moves and bad camera work of that league... - Beatnic57

Thing is Chicago got rid of him and even more glaring is that Buffalo did as well, and they can use anyone they can haha. Is he even playing for Edmonton? |

Kid has some skill. Hopefully it can translate into the NHL game. What’s the deal with the gold helmet? At first I thought maybe it was for the captain, but it always seems to be a different player wearing it.
Random thought, but since getting to the NHL is a goal of many international players, I’m surprised some international leagues haven’t shrunk the size of their rinks. |

I really didn’t think Murray was the main problem. Yes, he needed to be better, but the Pens had ZERO life to their game. They didn’t show any desperation or urgency. |

I believe the player wearing the gold helmet is the league's leading scorer at the time.

Bowman has totally lost it so I thought we had just kind of fleeced Chicago, but last year Buffalo had like six or less nhl-caliber forwards and they straight up just cut one of them in Kahun. That’s weird. That’s a huge red flag and makes me think we really just had to get rid of him. And no I don’t think he’s playing in Edmonton that much and it’s not like they’re deep. |

This may be coming right out of my ass, but I feel like there's been more than a few highly touted Finnish players that have crashed and burned. I don't just mean for the Pens. Wasn't there also a player named Brunnstrom?
In reality it's probably no less than any later round or even un-drafted players that have haven't panned out, but the Finnish ones standing out in my mind. |

I think I read yesterday or the day before that he's in full-contact practice. I also think he said something to the effect he's feeling better each day and that he's getting closer.

I think someone else also mentioned that they can't financially bring him back in until the playoffs, but I can't confirm or deny.

I was wondering about that too. We were capped out fully healthy before bringing Carter on and I don’t think we IR’ed Matheson. |

You are correct! If they activated him, it would put them over the cap and they don't have anyone they'd want to dropped who would get them back below it! |
