He made the moves with full knowledge of the cap situation over the next two years. - Rinosaur
Only move you can really blame for that is MM, and technically that is less money than Hornqvist was set to make.
They’d have to move Petts and MM because of money. Who could they bring in for $3M or less to be the 2nd pair? Paying someone close to the same wouldn’t make any sense, or they’d just keep one. - Rinosaur
That might be what they do. I'm still not sure anyone takes MM.
Pens have 10 forwards, 8 defensemen (not including POJ), and 2 goalies signed with 2M to spare. The obvious cap clear is Pettersson or MM for space to sign 3 forwards. They likely lose a forward but add that money to their pool.
Not sure they NEED to lose anyone else to get cap compliant. Clearing salary to make other moves is a different story. |

Nice! Betting is the best haha
My buddy that I’m business partners with bet canes, pens, leafs and knights would win there divisions and wins just over $32,000 if they all do... has to hit all 4 or he gets nothing. Pretty much only pens left. He’s watching the game here and already nervous haha - pens4life-66
That’s such a brass balls parlay. I’m incredibly here for it and will be rooting for him. |

There were multiple reports from legit sources, specifically a few articles I read on the Athletic that JR had other offers for Horn for futures packages with the Pens having to retain very little to free up that space, but JR was dead-set on MM.
They said multiple GMs were shocked. |

I think so far the Burke/hexy team has been really good. They don’t do things for the sake of it or for shakeups. One factor they specified with carter was to not ruin the chemistry of the team. If they can find skilled burkulence then I’m absolutely down for it. Mentioning things like chemistry leads me to believe they are tuned in to the team. I hope the value sam venture more than jr did but all in all, even though I miss how busy jr was, I have developed quite a bit of faith in these two. |

Well it was a bad trade regardless. Perhaps they would have spent that money on a forward who they could also expose to expansion. He certainly wouldn't have banked it for next year.
Oh well |

Well, they NEED to move more than just Pettersson or MM. Marino's new contract kicks in which is $4.4, so moving one of Petts or MM is a wash just for that.
Not taking the expansion draft into consideration two key RFAs are Teddy and ZAR, which if I'm a betting man will be make in the low $2M range, maybe a little more for Teddy, so being conservative we're looking at around $2.5M combined raise. Obviously you don't need to move Zucker to make that happen. You could move Tanev and I highly doubt they move McCann or Carter, but they're still going to need more money.
Just based on that and these lines are just designed to show spots based on players who are signed, nothing to do with an opinion on what they should ice:
Jake-Sid-Rust
Zucker-Geno-Kap
McCann-Carter-Lafferty
ZAR-Blue-Tanev
Dumo/Letang
Petts or MM (depends on who gets moved)/Marino
Riikola/Ruhwedel
POJ/Friedman
ERod, Ceci and Gaudreau are UFAs. There are other RFAs, but I'm not showing them because they'd like be two-way contracts which wouldn't impact much, but looking at that lineup, even if they wanted to create space for the possibility of Poulin, Legare or anyone else, they'd need to clear out salary.
If they want to make more impactful moves, then that's when you're talking about moving three key players out.
Sorry for the long post lol |

I think that's one of my biggest gripes in JR's last year with the Pens. I think you can make moves to "win now" while still planning for the future a little more, but what's done is done.
My overall point is that Hex and Burke have their work cut out for them and some major changes may be needed to maintain the level of quality depth they have right now.

While Geno still looks a bit rusty/sloppy with his puck decisions, I think he has noticeably more jump in the step today which is nice to see. |

Pretty sure GMJR (and now Hexy/Burke) know they can move out Petts $$ at any time, even for no real return. Whether that be to Seattle in the expansion draft or to a team in need of a top 4, that savings factors in Marino's raise (Bjugs money off the books cancels out Carters money for next year)
That single move gets them close. The next part will be their roster management, What they do with the likes of Zucker, MM, Blueger, Zar, etc
If they trade Petts, then perhaps it's MM or Zucker that goes to Seattle, or ZAR/Teddy and that's one less guy getting a raise
I would speculate Hexy/Burke have already talked with Francis and have a good idea of who's gonna be leaving |

Weirdly the Redwings are sellers but may have gotten the best deadline acquisition. |

Funny thing is we made our bets together at the same time and I tried talking him out of making that bet. I said make them all separately which would have been less then half the total winnings, can’t remember exactly but it was about $12,000 if he did... lucky so far he never listened to me haha |
