First it’s the whole decade now it’s just this year, I know your type too well. He was one of the few guys that played well. Sorry every single young guy sucks outside of Farabee. - ClaudeFather
I don’t disagree with your assessment of the young players. Spot on. But there is more to being a captain than points. There is zero hustle on his part every since he leveled crosby in the playoffs & got a fat contract. Although he does a good job of acting like he’s hustling some times so I get it. And especially when they’re down 3-0 in the first 5 minutes of games than he gets an “angry face”. Have first period starts not been a huge problem basically the whole tenure under hakstol & now under AV? Isn’t a leader supposed to make sure his troops are ready or does it fall on a 22 year old? |

Yes, I’d guess so. Seems odd though.

What was he? A bad hockey player? Despite, as you said, leading the league in points in that 3-5 year period? - Ftown19125
Empty numbers. There were seasons when he got 40% of his points on the power play. Yes, he needs to do that but you have to have better effort 5 on 5. Obviously he shouldn’t have been the number 1 center on those teams but to not even make the roster or crack the line up says everything. |

I grew up in the NYC shadows (10 miles from Times Square). I never got the appeal. I'm a suburbs kind of guy. - PLindbergh31
Amazing.
I grew up in rural Oregon (with stints in Asia). I remember when the bus pulled into Philly. The area was pretty seedy then, likes Times Square pre-disneyfication. There were peepshows on Market Street, and pushers who doubled as pimps scattered across. I looked up at a window, and the neon sign said "Live Sex" (the last y had fallen off). I just had a feeling I have come home.
In 1998, I ran out of money and lived in the burbs for 8 months in the basement of my girlfriend's parents. Hated it. I was born a city slicker. Haven't owned a car in 25 years. |

My point exactly. Team Canada team usa they want the best players right?!? Well if he was leading the NHL in points for a 3/5 stretch how does he not make team Canada? Not a good HOCKEY PLAYER. Talented in areas yes but not a hockey player |

This is not a critique but a genuine question: do we have the slowest group of top 9 forwards in the NHL? I was casually watching a bunch of teams across the league, and they all seem faster than us. Or play faster. |

The slow starts is something I don’t think anyone has an answer for and it’s been a long time of this , no idea what to make of it. Some blame goes to G on that for sure. |

What’s frustrating is he is very capable of playing that way. Like you said he did it the whole year last year. I hate him - Just5
It seems that he chooses to play how HE wants to, not how the coaches want him to play. |

I can understand the argument of giving the C to someone else, especially after this disappointing season. I don’t agree with it, don’t believe that Giroux is the central problem in the inconsistency or slow starts; however, I think I understand the argument.
I don’t think giving it to Couturier right now with one year left on his contract is the right move. Couturier has been here for all the same team issues as well. I also don’t think any of our young guys like Farabee or Provorov are ready for that role. Unless they acquire that guy to wear the C, I just don’t see it happening.
I think that the Flyers have spent years providing opportunities to Giroux to develop his leadership skills, and I would personally hope they give him that chance to show his growth next season in the last year of his big contract.
That BS about him not being a very good hockey player is just that...BS. He is not perfect, but he has made perfect plays that very few can do. He may not be what you envision, but he has willing carried the weight of being the face of the Flyers and the responsibility of wearing the C through thick and thin. I respect that.

If it was a year or a couple years than searching for answers/not having one is reasonable. However, this issue goes back to even when berube was here. At some point you have to place 100% of that on the common denominator. Several different coaches. A few different GM’s. Obviously different players except....the “leader” has been here through it all. To be clear it’s not his fault the organization gave him the C & it’s not his fault he isn’t capable of doing the job but it’s time for a change. |

Never need it. I take a bus with a stop right across my house that drops me outside my office building. Wife walks to work. Most friends are nearby. Grocery stores are within blocks, as is everything else. When we go places, we take the train and then hire a cab/uber etc from station to whoever's home.
The key thing however is that we don't have kids. So we can pretty much pick and choose our non-city expeditions. Don't have a dog either.
I miss the tranquility of the woods, but else, why the hell would I want to go live in the burbs? To hang out in the mall? I never understood the appeal. |

I have a new theory about that. The common denominator could be the Flyers scouts. |

Absolutely agree. As the roster sits right now they don’t have anyone who can wear the C which in and of itself is a huge problem. |

Common denominator should include coots and Jake as well, coots always left off for whatever reason |

Look at each teams “best player” in our division. They have the ability to take over games, keep the puck on their stick, win battles, skate end to end. G can’t do any of those things. It doesn’t work if he is your best player. It just equals mediocre results.500.

Giroux has taken over several games for us this season where we deserved the L and got us a win. You are a moron. He's not perfect but he also is not the problem. |

I agree they get some blame. Jake more fhan coots but the C is the leader the one who everyone follows. |
