Pt 6 (final)
Once upon a time, in Tampa, their friendship wasn’t on display for the world to see.
Rather, it was just those two. Crosby and Malkin. Sidney and Evgeni. Sid and Geno. The two greatest athletes to grace Pittsburgh in a generation. Two icons from very different places who, above all else, just decided to be friends.
“I remember that day well,” Crosby said. “We knew what we had to do.”
That conversation they had at Amalie Arena, that moment in time when it was just the two of them sitting in an otherwise silent locker room, triggered everything.
Malkin may be the most decorated hockey player to come from Russia, and make no mistake, that means so much to him. Crosby was about to embark on a 12-month tour de force — 2016 Cup champ, 2016 Conn Smythe winner, 2016 World Cup of Hockey champion, 2016 World Cup of Hockey MVP, 2017 Cup champ, 2017 Conn Smythe winner — that would cement him as one of the five greatest players in history.
They had already accomplished much before May 24, 2016.
“We just wanted more,” Crosby said. “We still do, too.”
Their friendship stronger than ever, Crosby and Malkin teamed up and lifted the Penguins to great heights that season. And the next one. And maybe more winning remains.
The duo that bonded because of a ravenous desire to win realized something along the way.
“I hope we win more,” Crosby said. “That’s always the goal. But no matter what, he’s my friend for life.”

Per Bob Grove from April 17th
"Pens are 75-45-13 in afternoon GP with Crosby in the lineup, and he's 67-109-176 in those games (1.32 points/GP).
He scored a goal in his first NHL afternoon GP on Dec. 17, 2005 @ Buffalo (3-4 loss)." - burgh4life87
feels much worse than that and I think its because they've been terrible more than not in these games the last 3 or 4 seasons....any way to check that out? I remember them being very good in matinees a decade ago haha |

Watched Brian Burke on Darren Dreger and Ray Ferraro's podcast... really easy to see why players and people within the league like him. Straight shooter, doesnt BS you or anything like that. |

Obviously nobody knows how this series will play out. There are so many reasons why it could go so many ways, but it's funny reading why Islanders fans think it's in the bag and 90% of it is based on what happened two years ago and 10% is based on Jarry.

Under Sullivan they are 33-16-2 in games that start at or before 3pm, I think that would be considered an afternoon game no? Some of that came from Bob Grove who tweeted out their record at the end of last season. I added this seasons record through hockeyreference. |

I think they had a rough stretch in there of like 4 straight day losses and that shifted everyones opinion. |

I was also pretty certain there were a few years they were just terrible at day games. And not that they just lost but they were completely lifeless. 2 of us can’t be wrong. |

If the Pens lose, I think Jarry will be the main reason. I think the 2nd most obvious reason would be Geno not returning to form. I think those two issues are entirely plausible. If those 2 play well, and the rest of the team doesn't crumble with the injury bug, I don't see how the Pens lose.
IMO, Carter has been a bit of a game changer. 4 lines that can score goals.
Can't wait to see Tanev play again. |

That's the great thing about McCann and Carter. If Sully was smart he would try to get McCann and Carter the 2nd line match ups and let Malkin work back against the bottom 6 matchups. |

This is a very real possibilty. He didn't look great the couple games back and being held out is cause for concern.

I think the main reason they'd lose is because the Pens trying to keep setting up the perfect play instead of getting pucks on net and getting Varlamov's face. |
