They probably won’t which is unfortunate. Better hope Morgan Frost is the next Giroux !
- ClaudeFather

Giroux was starting to make an impact at 21, regular season and playoffs. Depending on whether Farabee, who I feel was and is the better of the two (Frost) when drafted, doesn't regress much the next couple years could end up being the future star of the Flyers. Not sure I would consider him a franchise player, but a star like Giroux.

Hoping Farabee can be like a Jake Guentzel , showed some promise this year. We shall see.

3-4 years away from being a legit contender after a decade of futility? So on to the next coach and GM?
- PLindbergh31

And to think the talk of the last several years has been that we are 2-3 years away each offseason. That was horrible. Now everyone is content in accepting 3-4 years away for who knows how long.

No! Fix this sorry looking jigsaw this offseason, and let’s see real progress. Eastern conference final or bust!

How long do the GM and coach last if this isn’t the best offseason of their careers? 2nd game of the regular season?

I wanted Brock Nelson over hayes, probably would have cost a little less too. Hayes disappearing act this year was pitiful

Flyers have a lot of those potential players, what they have been lacking is THAT guy that can make the others look and play better.

Flyers suck at sucking at the right time. Although they did suck perfectly in 2007 and still failed at getting the good player. They just need to try to get that #1 one of these days.
- Glak18

Not disagreeing with you, just saying sucking badly doesn’t guarantee a top pick or a good team (even if you suck for years lol)

I’m not sure what the timing was but going into that summer that was who I wanted. I know it wasn’t done during the year, it was 100% in the off-season.

Nobody here should have wanted a price tag like this on Kevin Hayes of all players from the very start. What did we trade to get his rights??

There's a reason my location says what it does, think I change it to that 3-4 years ago? Same story different season.

All other teams in the NHL would have to be onboard for the Flyers to overhaul this team in 1 offseason. The best Fletcher will be able to do is hopefully find a piece or two for down the road and this team is clearly not a piece away.

I wasn’t a supporter of the Hayes decision either, but he showed the year before that he can at least bring enough to the table to help the team win. He just didn’t do that this season. Well, we have him and his unmovable contract now; he is another one in need of an epically good offseason.

Buffalo and Edmonton are perfect examples of that and also perfect examples of dysfunctional organizations that clearly do not know what they are doing.

Teams that win consistently don't just get lucky because they got a high pick that becomes a stud, it just makes it easier to do the rest of the job. So the argument that top picks don't guarantee success is true, but mismanagement will always guarantee failure no matter where the team picks.

I liked the signing but wasn’t crazy on the price. but he was major for us last year. Imagine going into last season without a 2C? He’s been a major, major disappointment this season though. I think I heard he’ll need minor surgery. Hopefully he has a big offseason and comes to camp ready to contribute more. We really didn’t get those clutch goals that we saw him score countless times his first season. All those short handed goals were awesome, too.

Random thoughts...one of Bill’s recent blogs got me thinking on the expansion draft again...

One interesting point was the idea of trading players that won’t be protected for picks or possibly to move up at the draft. I know most people say Ghost first and I would be shocked if he doesn’t try. If some other teams wants him and has the protection slot, sure. I just don’t think that is likely. I was thinking more like low cost players, kind of like the Cousins trade or prospects that are ED available but haven’t made the Flyers yet. So who are those guys?

Hagg, Braun, and NAK...Bunny, Twarynski, Sandin, Kase?

I say this because leaving so many players, that are inexpensive or young and still can contribute to the bottom half of an NHL lineup, exposed makes it less likely that Seattle takes one of our higher salary players. Does this mean it might be worth it to make a choice and part ways with one of them and go ahead and pay Seattle the incentive?

To be fair that should be a major priority when signing a high priced FA, will the player be able to perform throughout the contract? That is 100% on the Flyers. The increased price due to demand should never force a bad business decision. In retrospect they probably felt they had to because they obviously knew about Patrick's condition leading into the signing, but thinking short term leads to long term problems. I still think Hayes and his intangibles were a good fit, but that term was a poor decision. If it was a take it or leave it situation then they should of left it.

That's an interesting strategy, but the players you list I don't know if any team would give any cheap assets back (draft picks). Most likely they would want to send a player back to keep a contract slot open and none of them are any better than what teams already have in their system.

Problem being Seattle doesn’t have a system yet.

Isles! I root for the underdog here. If Pens let Isles score 3-4 every game it will be a short series.

I misunderstood, thought you meant trading players to other teams so it forces Seattle to take a high priced unprotected player.

Edit: I don't think those players would be enough to force Seattle to take a specific player. They would want to copy Vegas model with a 1st.

It was probably confusing....I was contrasting what you say above with paying Seattle an incentive to take a specific higher salary player.

Is there a better argument for the latter now because of the flat cap? Basically teams were paying other teams to dump salary this year. It would just be doing this type of deal with Seattle. If Seattle doesn’t take a higher salary player, options are really limited. Possibly making a worse deal with another team to clear space.
